On the mechanical response in nanoalloys: the case of NiCo

Juan A. de la Rosa Abad et al.

Summary: In this study, the nanoindentation behavior of spherical NiCo nanoalloys with core-shell and random mixing patterns was investigated. The impact of the elemental distribution and proportion on the mechanical response was compared against monometallic nanoparticles. It was found that plastic deformation originated from the nucleation of Shockley partial dislocations (SPDs) on the surface of the nanoparticles, regardless of the mixing patterns. The presence of Co in the external shell was observed to increase the yield strength.

Size-Dependent Role of Surfaces in the Deformation of Platinum Nanoparticles

Soodabeh Azadehranjbar et al.

Summary: The strength and deformation mechanisms of platinum nanoparticles were studied using in situ nanomechanical testing inside a transmission electron microscope. Surface curvature was found to play a prominent and size-dependent role, leading to a smaller-is-weaker trend in larger particles. However, particles below 9 nm showed a saturation in weakening and exhibited homogeneous deformation with shape recovery after load removal.

Tunable Mechanical Response of Self-Assembled Nanoparticle Superlattices

Somayajulu Dhulipala et al.

Summary: In situ nanomechanical experiments show that shaping nanomaterials can significantly enhance their stiffness and strength. The article presents discrete element method (DEM) simulations and an analytical core-shell model to predict the mechanical properties of shaped NPSLs. This work provides a route for tunable mechanical responses of self-assembled NPSLs and guides the design of future NPSL-containing devices.

Platinum nanoparticle compression: Combining in situ TEM and atomistic modeling

Ingrid M. Padilla Espinosa et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of small platinum nanoparticles was investigated through in situ compression experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The experimental results, obtained using a nanomanipulator and a modified mechanical tester, showed high-resolution measurements of load and particle morphology. Molecular dynamics simulations provided complementary measurements and atomic resolution of dislocations. The critical resolved shear stress for failure was found to be comparable between the experimental and simulation results. This study demonstrated the potential of combining atomistic simulations and in situ experiments to understand the behavior of metal nanoparticles under compression.

Anomalous size effect on yield strength enabled by compositional heterogeneity in high-entropy alloy nanoparticles

Jingyuan Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of compositional heterogeneity in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) on their mechanical properties. The results show that, as the sample size decreases below a certain threshold, a transition in the mechanical properties of HEAs occurs due to the size effect of compositional heterogeneity.

Atomistic Simulations of the Elastic Compression of Platinum Nanoparticles

Ingrid M. Padilla Espinosa et al.

Summary: The elastic behavior of nanoparticles is influenced by particle shape, size, and crystallographic orientation. This study used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the compression of platinum nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes. The results showed that the calculated elastic modulus varied depending on the calculation method, particle size, shape, and orientation. By analyzing the stress distributions, it was found that the shape and orientation dependence of the elastic modulus is caused by stress triaxiality and inhomogeneity within the particles. The findings provide a better understanding of the elastic properties of nanoparticles and distinguish the geometric contributions from true changes in elastic properties at the nanoscale.

Effect of size on the surface energy of noble metal nanoparticles from analytical and numerical approaches

Hakim Amara et al.

Summary: A robust approach was developed to determine the surface energy of metallic nanoparticles as a function of particle size and temperature, showing a significant increase in surface energy as the particle size decreases. A correction to the spherical approximation was proposed to improve models for small size nanoparticles.

Soft or Hard? Investigating the Deformation Mechanisms of Au-Pd and Pd Nanocubes under Compression: An Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Study

Juan A. de la Rosa Abad et al.

Summary: This study investigates the atomistic mechanical response of Au-Pd core-shell and Pd nanocubes under indentation using molecular dynamics simulations, comparing the results to experimental observations. The research shows that different deformation mechanisms occur in core-shell and single-crystalline nanocubes, suggesting potential for tuning mechanical properties at the nanoscale by combining metals in a core-shell configuration.

Size and shape effects on the strength of platinum nanoparticles

J. Zimmerman et al.

Summary: The compressive strength of Pt nanoparticles shows a size effect, with smaller particles achieving the highest strength, and the particle shape (expressed by the ratio of top facet to projected diameter) also affects strength. The results suggest that Pt nanoparticles have lower strength normalized by shear modulus compared to other face-centered cubic metals.
