Understanding mechanism of voltage decay and temperature sensitivity of Li-rich manganese-based cathode materials

Xingpeng Cai et al.

Summary: In this study, the complex voltage decay mechanism of Li-rich manganese-based (LRM) cathode materials is explored to promote their commercialization. It is found that the evolution of irreversible thermodynamic structure is the fundamental cause of voltage decay in LRM cathode, and it worsens with increasing temperature. Investigating the sensitivity of LRM cathode materials to temperature reveals the reason for voltage decay, and points out the direction for modification design to achieve future commercialization.

Effects of soluble products decomposed from chelato-borate additives on formation of solid electrolyte interface layers

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the soluble product, BOF(2-) anion, from the film-forming additive of lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate plays a crucial role in improving the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer. It suppresses excessive decomposition of salt anions and catalyzes the reduction of ethylene carbonate, leading to enhanced stability of the interface.

Study of the formation and evolution of solid electrolyte interface via in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: The formation and evolution of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer in lithium ion batteries is a challenging task. This study presents a potential resolved in-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (PRIs-EIS) technique to investigate the SEI layer composition and interfacial reaction mechanism. The results show that more inorganic compounds accumulate in the SEI layer as the cycle continues, repairing the pore structure but decreasing the toughness. This cost-effective technique aids in the evaluation and design of electrolyte systems.

Cation and polyanion co-doping synergy to improve electrochemical performances of Li-rich manganese-based cathode materials

Chunlei Li et al.

Summary: The introduction of Al3+ cation and (BO3)3-/(BO4)5- polyanion into the Li-rich manganese-based (LRM) cathode materials enables double site occupation and charge regulation, leading to improved cycling performance and voltage decay issues caused by the anion redox reaction. Experimental and computational analysis demonstrate that this regulation method enhances the electrochemical properties and structural stability of the materials.

Decoupling the Voltage Hysteresis of Li-Rich Cathodes: Electrochemical Monitoring, Modulation Anionic Redox Chemistry and Theoretical Verifying

Gang Sun et al.

Summary: Research has found that cathodes in lithium-ion batteries with anionic redox experience issues such as oxygen release, voltage hysteresis, and sluggish kinetics. By adjusting the lithium/oxygen ratio, the electrochemical properties of these cathodes can be improved. Additionally, anionic redox processes exhibit slow kinetics and large hysteresis in comparison to fast cationic redox processes.
