'High-Density-SleepCleaner': An open-source, semi-automatic artifact removal routine tailored to high-density sleep EEG

Sven Leach et al.

Summary: This study presents a new semi-automatic artifact removal method for sleep hd-EEG recordings. By using a graphical user interface, the user assesses epochs based on four sleep quality markers and removes artifactual values. The method was applied to 54 overnight sleep hd-EEG recordings, demonstrating its feasibility.

Motor Learning Promotes the Coupling between Fast Spindles and Slow Oscillations Locally over the Contralateral Motor Network

Agustin Solano et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that traditional declarative structures play a role in the encoding and consolidation of procedural memories. These studies have also found converging physiological pathways across memory systems. In this study, we investigated the connection between slow oscillations and spindles in the stabilization of human motor memories. The results suggest that this coupling is relevant for motor memory consolidation.

Sleep EEG in young people with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: A cross-sectional study of slow-waves, spindles and correlations with memory and neurodevelopmental symptoms

Nicholas A. Donnelly et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed description of sleep neurophysiology in individuals with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11.2DS), highlighting EEG signature alterations that are associated with neurodevelopmental conditions and psychiatric symptoms. Sleep EEG features may serve as biomarkers for understanding the neurobiology of 22q11.2DS and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Development of an Adaptive Artifact Subspace Reconstruction Based on Hebbian/Anti-Hebbian Learning Networks for Enhancing BCI Performance

Bo-Yu Tsai et al.

Summary: Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a technology that translates brain signals into actions by establishing direct communication between the brain and external devices. This study proposes an adaptive online technique to remove artifacts from electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, improving BCI performance.

Functional connectivity during language processing in 3-month-old infants at familial risk for autism spectrum disorder

Xuan A. Tran et al.

Summary: The study suggests that connectivity measured through EEG during ASL at 3 months may predict the later onset of autism spectrum disorder symptoms at 18 months. Additionally, the alpha coherence at 3 months correlates positively with word production at 18 months, indicating that early alterations in connectivity may serve as markers for predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants.

A walk in the park? Characterizing gait-related artifacts in mobile EEG recordings

Nadine Svenja Josee Jacobsen et al.

Summary: Brain activity during natural walking outdoors can be captured using mobile EEG, but the recordings are often confounded by artifacts. This study expands on gait-related artifact features, presenting a seven-dimensional footprint that can be used to assess sensitivity to artifact reduction strategies. Evaluation of gait artifact handling showed improvements in topographies post-processing while maintaining unchanged morphologies and SNR, demonstrating the specificity of the techniques.

Conscious experiences and high-density EEG patterns predicting subjective sleep depth

Aurelie M. Stephan et al.

Summary: This study challenges the traditional notion that slow wave sleep accounts for feeling deeply asleep, revealing that subjective sleep depth is related to a neurophysiological process predominating in early NREM sleep, particularly in REM sleep. Brain activity in sleep misperceptors is more frequent and widespread, providing insights into improving subjective sleep quality research.

Automated preprocessing and phase-amplitude coupling analysis of scalp EEG discriminates infantile spasms from controls during wakefulness

Makoto Miyakoshi et al.

Summary: An automated EEG preprocessing pipeline was developed for artifact rejection and quantification of delta-gamma phase-amplitude coupling, aiding in differentiating children with infantile spasms from normal controls. The study found that MI derived from sleep data could robustly classify groups, while stricter preprocessing was required for successful group classification based on awake data.

Abnormal sleep physiology in children with 15q11.2-13.1 duplication (Dup15q) syndrome

Vidya Saravanapandian et al.

Summary: Children with Dup15q syndrome exhibit abnormal sleep physiology with increased beta power, reduced spindle density, and reduced or absent slow-wave sleep compared to age-matched neurotypical controls. This genetic condition highly penetrant for ASD shows three quantitative EEG biomarkers of sleep disruption, providing insights for further studies on the association between sleep and cognition.
