A Zero-Carbon Nuclear Energy Future? Lessons Learned from Perceptions of Climate Change and Nuclear Waste

Grace Dehner et al.

Summary: Nuclear energy is suggested as a solution to achieve net-zero carbon future, however, there are still environmental concerns with nuclear energy. This study surveyed 1616 participants from the U.S. and found that while nuclear energy is perceived as zero-carbon, it is not necessarily seen as clean. The majority of participants believe that nuclear energy may be part of the solution to climate change, but there are also concerns about pollution and environmental contamination. The acceptance of nuclear energy is associated with concern around climate change, while concern about nuclear waste reduces acceptance.

Ultra-Efficient Americium/Lanthanide Separation through Oxidation State Control

Zhipeng Wang et al.

Summary: Lanthanide/actinide separation is a worldwide challenge for atomic energy and nuclear waste treatment. This study presents a novel strategy to generate stable pentavalent Am (Am(V)) through coordination of Am(III) with a diglycolamide ligand and oxidation with Bi(V) species in the presence of an organic solvent. This strategy enables efficient stabilization of Am(V) and an extraordinarily high separation factor (>104) of Am from Ln, providing a new avenue for the high-OS chemistry of Am and fulfilling the crucial task of Ln/Am separation in the nuclear fuel cycle.

Can Nuclear Power Products Mitigate Greenhouse Gas Emissions? Evidence from Global Trade Network

Tingzhu Li et al.

Summary: Since its inception, nuclear power has been a hot topic in academic research and subject to controversy. This study explored the global nuclear power product trade network and its impact on GHG emissions from 2001 to 2018 using global databases and empirical analysis methods. The findings show that GNT had a suppressive effect on global GHG emissions and had a greater impact on countries with dominant positions, highlighting the heterogeneous effect of nuclear power product trade on GHG emissions.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of nuclear and renewable energy on CO2 emissions and concludes that both are equally effective in reducing CO2 emissions. The findings contradict a recent publication that claims nuclear power does not reduce CO2 emissions and that the two technologies crowd out each other. The authors suggest that this discrepancy may be due to specific conditioning of the data.
