Degradation of organic pollutants from water by biochar-assisted advanced oxidation processes: Mechanisms and applications

Tao Jiang et al.

Summary: Biochar has shown great potential in environmental remediation due to its low cost, large specific surface area, porosity, and high conductivity. However, there is still a need to further explore the effects of biochar properties on catalytic performance and fill in the knowledge gaps in the reaction mechanisms of biochar-assisted advanced oxidation processes. Additionally, there is a lack of regeneration methods for biochar catalysts. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically review the latest research progress of biochar-assisted advanced oxidation processes in the treatment of organic pollutants in water.

Tetracycline accumulation in biofilms enhances the selection pressure on Escherichia coli for expression of antibiotic resistance

Xiaojie Hu et al.

Summary: This study compared the antibiotic resistance expression between biofilm and planktonic bacteria when exposed to sub-minimal inhibitory concentration of tetracycline. The results showed that biofilm E. coli exhibited 1.6 times higher antibiotic resistance-associated fluorescence emissions compared to planktonic bacteria. The enhanced expression of antibiotic resistance in biofilm bacteria could be attributed to the high affinity of tetracycline with extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the higher selection pressure exerted by the accumulated tetracycline in biofilms.

Penghui Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, a well-dispersed nano-Fe3O4 (NF) composite with N-doped biochar as a spatial support (NF/0.5N(3)BC) was synthesized from steel pickling waste liquor (SPWL) and corncob. It showed excellent degradation efficiency (91.56%) and rate constant (0.042 min(-1)) of tetracycline (TC) by activating peroxydisulfate (PDS). The possible active sites for TC degradation were identified as Fe species, defective edges, C = O, graphitic-N, and pyridinic-N. Moreover, the NF/0.5N(3)BC + PDS system exhibited excellent TC degradation/detoxification ability.

Biochar co-doped with nitrogen and boron switching the free radical based peroxydisulfate activation into the electron-transfer dominated nonradical process

Jibo Dou et al.

Summary: In this study, N/B co-doped biochars were used as metal-free activators of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for tetracycline degradation, and the roles of dopants as well as the relative contribution of radical vs nonradical oxidations were comprehensively investigated. The findings demonstrated that co-doping N and B into biochars not only enhanced catalytic activity, but also shifted the PDS-activated process from radical to electron transfer-dominated nonradical pathway. The study provided new insights into the critical role of heteroatom-doped carbocatalysts in PDS nonradical activation.

How Nitrogen and Sulfur Doping Modified Material Structure, Transformed Oxidation Pathways, and Improved Degradation Performance in Peroxymonosulfate Activation

Xiao-Chi Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates how nitrogen and sulfur doping transformed the activation mechanism of a Co@rGO/PMS system for tetracycline degradation. The results show that nitrogen doping significantly increased the degradation efficiency without affecting the activation mechanism transformation, while sulfur doping converted Co3O4 to Co4S3 and transformed the oxidation pathway, resulting in higher stability against environmental interferences. The study also demonstrates that Co4S3 has a higher energy barrier for PMS adsorption and cleavage, making the radical pathway less easily stimulated.

Role of co-existing anions in non-radical and radical processes of carbocatalyzed persulfate activation for acetaminophen degradation

Kadarkarai Govindan et al.

Summary: We investigated the effect of co-existing anions on the activation of potassium persulfate by multiwalled carbon nanotubes and N-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes for the degradation of acetaminophen. The results showed that CO32- and HCO3- had a higher catalytic performance compared to Cl-, SO42-, and NO3-. The presence of CO32- and HCO3- modified the radical pathway, while the non-radical pathway was not affected by co-existing anions. Co-existing anions did not significantly affect the formation of degradation products via the electron transfer mediative pathway, but limited the di-hydroxylation pathways.
