Synthesis of photosensitive catalysts with wide-band absorption and ability to enhance the degradation of polyester fabric wastes

Hui Ma et al.

Summary: A series of photocatalysts were developed for the degradation of PET fabric wastes, providing a simpler and cleaner approach with high degradation efficiency. These photocatalysts could work at a wide range of wavelengths and reduce the tensile strength of PET fabrics by up to 64% after 125 hours of exposure. The degradation of PET fabrics was mainly caused by the breakage of ester bonds. This study proposes feasible mechanisms for the degradation of PET under photocatalysis, which can significantly reduce the environmental burden of disposed textiles.

Broad spectrum driven Y doped BiO 2-x for enhanced degradation of tetracycline: Synergy between singlet oxygen and free radicals

Yi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of the synergy between singlet oxygen and free radicals in driving the degradation of organic pollutants in water. The YBiO2_ x photocatalyst, prepared through a hydrothermal method with yttrium doping, is found to produce oxygen vacancies and possess up-conversion property. Superoxide radicals, singlet oxygen, hydroxyl radicals, and holes play crucial roles in the photocatalytic reaction process. The study also reveals that the degradation efficiency of tetracycline can be maintained in the presence of various anions and humic acid in wastewater, thanks to the synergy between singlet oxygen and free radicals.

Visible light-driven deep oxidation of NO and its durability over Fe doped BaSnO3: The NO+ intermediates mechanism and the storage capacity of Ba ions

Xinjie Song et al.

Summary: A Fe-doped BaSnO3 photocatalyst with high activity and durability was developed. The incorporation of Fe ions increased the number of oxygen vacancies and facilitated the formation of reactive oxygen species under visible light. Moreover, alkaline earth metal ions stored the oxidized products, exposing the active sites and maintaining the durable oxidation of NO over Fe-BaSnO3.

Sunlight-Induced Interfacial Electron Transfer of Ferrihydrite under Oxic Conditions: Mineral Transformation and Redox Active Species Production

Zhipeng Shu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the expanded pathways of sunlight-driven ferrihydrite transformation in the presence of dissolved oxygen. Sunlight was found to significantly facilitate the conversion of ferrihydrite to goethite. The transformation process generated redox active species and exhibited three pathways for the production of hydroxyl radicals: oxidation of water, reduction of dissolved oxygen, and photolysis of Fe(III)-hydroxyl complexes.
