Robust PAAm-TA hydrogel coated PVDF membranes with excellent crude-oil antifouling ability for sustainable emulsion separation

Yuxie Jiang et al.

Summary: Hydrogel coating is extensively studied for oil/water separation. In this study, an ultra-thin Polyacrylamide-Tannic (PAAm-TA) hydrogel coating was applied on the surface of PVDF microfiltration membrane via a simple immersion process. The resulting PVDF/PAAm-TA membrane exhibited superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties, efficient emulsion separation efficiency, and flux. The membranes also demonstrated good mechanical stability and electrostatic adsorption properties, making them suitable for complex water treatment. This study provides new insights and methods for preparing hydrogel-coated porous materials for oil/water separation.

Breakthrough in controlling membrane fouling and complete demulsification via electro-fenton pathway: Principle and mechanisms

Liang Wang et al.

Summary: Untreated emulsified oil wastewater can cause severe damage to the environment. The deformation of emulsion interfacial film is still a major challenge for bio-inspired superhydrophilic membrane, leading to post-processing of membrane concentrates. Moreover, conventional self-cleaning strategies have difficulties in mitigating fouling deep inside membrane pores, creating another challenge for long-term operation. To overcome these limitations, a novel electro-Fenton assisted superhydrophilic membrane was designed, achieving high permeation flux and effective oil/water separation through real-time degradation of foulants and electrostatic repulsion forces.

Janus Polyacrylonitrile/Carbon Nanotube Nanofiber Membranes for Oil/Water Separation

Xianhang Yan et al.

Summary: In this paper, Janus PAN nanofiber membranes (PNM) were prepared by co blending hydrophilic SiO2 nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) doped with PAN (PNM-SiO2 and PNM-CNT, respectively) and then using sequential multilayer electrospinning. The existence of electrostatic mutual gravitational force between SiO2 and CNTs makes the binding between the multilayer membranes exist more firmly. Janus PAN membranes have different wetting properties and can efficiently separate water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions with high flux and separation efficiency.
