DFT calculations of double vacancies MoS2 catalyzing water gas shift reaction: S vacancies as electron bridge promote electron transfer to H2O and CO molecules

Yue Du et al.

Summary: The poor activity of MoS2 basal plane limits efficient hydrogen production. Single and double sulfur vacancy MoS2 (VS-MoS2 and VS, S-MoS2) were used for water gas shift reaction (WGSR). The adsorption energy of VS, S-MoS2 for CO molecule is significantly higher than that of original MoS2 and VS, S-MoS2. The energy barrier of the rate-determining step in the association mechanism of VS, S-MoS2 is lower than pristine MoS2. S vacancies serve as active sites for CO and H2O adsorption and facilitate electron transfer.

Photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen to ammonia by bismuth oxyhalides containing oxygen vacancies

Jieyi Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, BiOCl and BiOBr photocatalysts with abundant O vacancies were synthesized for photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen to ammonia. The results showed that the ammonia generation rates of BiOCl and BiOBr with O vacancies were significantly higher than those of pure BiOCl and BiOBr. The O vacancies narrowed the band gap of BiOX and reduced the energy requirement for visible-light excited carrier generation. The O vacancies not only enriched photogenerated electrons but also promoted the transfer of more electrons to N2 molecules, thereby facilitating photocatalytic N2 reduction reaction.
