Summary: The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is an important area of interest globally due to economic interests and environmental protection. This study proposes low-temperature heating with low-energy consumption to enhance dissociation efficiency. The ideal heating temperature was determined by examining the pyrolysis properties of electrode materials and binders. SEM-EDS analysis was performed on the surface morphology and element distribution of electrode material and fluid collection. Results show that 500 oC is the efficient low-temperature for dissociation.

Summary: Froth flotation is proposed as a method to separate anodic graphite particles from cathodic lithium metal oxides (LMOs) in the fine fraction of black mass from spent lithium-ion batteries. The flotation performance of a pyrolyzed black mass was improved by adding a pre-treatment step consisting of mechanical attrition with and without kerosene addition. The recovery of LMOs increased significantly, but the selectivity decreased.
