Selective degradation of organic micropollutants by activation of peroxymonosulfate by Se@NC: Role of Se doping and nonradical pathway mechanism

Yandong Chai et al.

Summary: In this study, Se@NC-x decorated with Se was successfully synthesized using a two-step calcination method with zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) as a precursor. Mechanistic studies revealed that an active complex (Se@NC-900/PMS*) was formed through the adsorption of PMS onto the surface of Se@NC-900, and this complex could oxidize phenol by rapidly decomposing PMS. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the doping of Se induced local charge redistribution, activating the catalytic potential of the initially inert carbon skeleton. Linear correlations were observed between the XLogP, Delta E, VIP, ELUMO (Se@NC/PMS)-HOMO (pollutants) values and the degradation rate constants of different micropollutants, indicating the high selectivity of the Se@NC-900/PMS system for pollutant degradation. These findings not only shed light on the role of Se in enhancing the activation of PMS in Se@NC-x, but also provide insights into the physicochemical properties and degradation performance of Se@NC catalysts.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by single-atom Fe-g-C3N4 catalysts for high efficiency degradation of tetracycline via nonradical pathways: Role of high-valent iron-oxo species and Fe-Nx sites

Xiaoming Peng et al.

Summary: A Fenton-like catalyst was prepared using isolated Fe single-atom and Fe clusters anchored onto a g-C3N4 framework for the heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetracycline (TC). The single Fe atoms served as active sites with optimal binding energy for PMS activation, leading to the production of high-valent iron-oxo species and single oxygen-dominated nonradical processes causing TC degradation. This study demonstrates the superior catalytic activity of single Fe atoms compared to Fe clusters in the activation of PMS for TC degradation.

Enhanced degradation of organic compounds through the interfacial transfer of electrons in the presence of phosphate and Nitrogen-cobalt doped graphitic carbon

Daniel T. Oyekunle et al.

Summary: Phosphate ions can accelerate PMS decomposition and improve the degradation of target organic compounds. The physical mixture of phosphate with Co and N doped graphitic carbon shows lower electrical transfer resistance and strong buffering capacity at neutral pH. However, phosphate needs to be replenished after each reaction cycle to maintain high catalytic performance.

Synergistic adsorption and degradation of diclofenac by zero-valent iron modified spent bleaching earth carbon: Mechanism and toxicity assessment

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, spent bleaching earth (SBE) was modified and loaded with zero-valent iron (nZVI) to remove diclofenac (DCF) from water bodies. The removal efficiency of DCF reached a maximum of 87.0% under optimal conditions. Four possible degradation paths were inferred based on detected reaction intermediate products. The toxicity assessment showed that CTAB-SBE@C-nZVI can gradually dechlorinate DCF and reduce its toxicity. This study demonstrates the potential and environmental friendliness of using CTAB-SBE@C-nZVI for waste treatment.
