Enhanced ethanol-sensing characteristics of Au decorated In-doped SnO2 porous nanotubes at low working temperature

Long Chen et al.

Summary: Au decorated In-doped SnO2 porous nanotubes were fabricated and showed good ethanol sensing properties. The 3% mol Au decorated In-doped SnO2 porous nanotubes had high response to ethanol and could detect ethanol down to 50 ppb at a low working temperature of 150 degrees C. The gas sensor also demonstrated high selectivity, reversibility, and long-term stability, attributed to factors such as oxygen vacancies, catalytic activity of Au nanocatalysts, and porous structures.

Synthesis of Au/SnO2 composites and their sensing properties toward n-butanol

Siyu Wang et al.

Summary: A series of very small grain Au/SnO2 composites were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal method. The composites showed a hierarchical structure composed of 20-30 nm spherical nanoparticles, consisting of 8 nm Au cores and 5 nm SnO2 nanograins. The porous composites exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity to n-butanol at low working temperatures. The study suggests that controlling the grain size of SnO2 and using gold nanoparticles can improve the gas-sensing properties of SnO2 at low temperatures.

Application of Transient Infrared Spectroscopy To Investigate the Role of Gold in Ethanol Gas Sensing over Au/SnO2

Maximilian Pfeiffer et al.

Summary: Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) combined with resistance measurements were used to study the mechanism of Au/SnO2 in ethanol gas sensing and investigate the influence of gold on the sensor response. The time-resolved DRIFT spectra revealed differences in the amount of C-H-containing adsorbates between Au/SnO2 and bare SnO2, with less adsorbates on Au/SnO2 due to their consumption by adsorbed oxygen species. Modulation excitation DRIFT spectroscopy (ME-DRIFTS) distinguished the temporal behavior of different C-H-containing surface adsorbates on Au/SnO2 compared to bare SnO2. The presence of a new surface species associated with CO adsorbed on negatively charged gold particles was detected by ME-DRIFTS. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet/visible spectra confirmed the presence of metallic gold, which had no significant influence on the electronic properties of the SnO2 sensor material. Based on the spectroscopic findings, the increase in sensor response was attributed to oxygen spillover from gold to the surface of tin oxide.

Atomically Dispersed Pt on Three-Dimensional Ordered Macroporous SnO2 for Highly Sensitive and Highly Selective Detection of Triethylamine at a Low Working Temperature

Junjie Xiang et al.

Summary: In this study, SnO2 with a three-dimensional ordered macroporous structure (3DOM) was prepared and enhanced for TEA sensing through Pt loading. It was found that Pt existed mainly in the state of atomic dispersion on the material surface, providing more active sites, lower response energy barriers, and improved sensing performance. The Pt/SnO2 sensor exhibited low operating temperature and low detection limit, and demonstrated high selectivity for TEA.

Fabrication of a humidity-resistant formaldehyde gas sensor through layering a molecular sieve on 3D ordered macroporous SnO2 decorated with Au nanoparticles

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) Au/SnO2 gas sensor was prepared via a self-assembly template method and optimized for performance. The decorated sensor showed remarkable response and lower detection limit compared to the undecorated sensor, with fast response-recovery process and good stability. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that Au/SnO2 nanoparticles have selective adsorption and electrical conductivity, enabling selective formaldehyde detection. Additionally, the 3MCM-48 layer protected the sensor from moisture, maintaining a high response value even at high humidity levels.

DMMP sensors based on Au-SnO2 hybrids prepared through colloidal assembly approach: Gas sensing performances and mechanism study

Zhimin Yang et al.

Summary: This research proposes a facile and efficient colloidal assembly approach to prepare Au modified SnO2 hybrids (Au-SnO2) with perfect metal-semiconductor interface for DMMP detection. The optimized DMMP sensors based on Au-SnO2 hybrids exhibit excellent sensing performances, including high response, low operating temperature, extremely low limit of detection, and short response/recovery time. The synergy of chemical oxidation and physical adsorption between Au-SnO2 hybrids and DMMP is found to be the main reason for the outstanding sensing performances. This work provides insight into the DMMP sensing mechanism and offers a promising general approach for the development of high-performance gas sensors.

Template-derived net-like SnO2 nanoarrays for robust H2S sensing with broad-range linear response

Chuanxin Ge et al.

Summary: In this study, the on-chip preparation of SnO2 nanoarrays with porous netlike structure was achieved using in-situ grown NiO nanoarrays as the template. The as-prepared SnO2 nanoarrays exhibited excellent selectivity, stability, and linear response to H2S. The nanoarrays showed higher and faster H2S response compared to the dense film counterpart due to their porous net-like microstructure. A portable sensor device based on SnO2 nanoarrays was fabricated for accurate H2S detection.

Summary: Ethanol sensors with superior performance were fabricated using Au nanoparticles decorated SnO2 hollow nanospheres (Au-SnO2 HNS). The ethanol-sensing response of SnO2 HNS improved 2.7 times when exposed to 100 ppm ethanol gas measured at 250 degrees C, showing selective sensing response towards ethanol gas compared to other VOC gases.
