Recent progress on photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy

Heejeong Kim et al.

Summary: Noninvasive treatments for terminal cancer patients, such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT), have gained significant interest. These treatments utilize light and photosensitizers (PS) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) or heat. Designing new PSs, specifically activatable and heavy-atom-free PSs, is an active area of research in this field. This article discusses recent contributions to PDT and PTT.

Mitochondria-targeted smart AIEgens: Imaging and therapeutics

Haidong Li et al.

Summary: Mitochondria, as the main energy source of cells, play important roles in the regulation of physiology and diseases. Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have become a research hotspot due to their unique properties, and can be used to dynamically monitor mitochondrial behaviors and effectively kill tumors through regulating cell death pathways. This review provides systematic information on the working mechanism of aggregation-induced emission, design principles of mitochondria-targeted AIEgens, examples of AIEgens for imaging and detecting bio-species in mitochondria, and their biomedical applications.

Real-Time Evaluation of Hydrogen Peroxide Injuries in Pulmonary Fibrosis Mice Models with a Mitochondria-Targeted Near-Infrared Fluorescent Probe

Xinyu Song et al.

Summary: The study focused on the molecular mechanism of oxidative stress in pulmonary fibrosis, and designed a mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe for detecting H2O2 levels. The probe showed excellent fluorescence performance and biocompatibility in living cells and mouse models. It can be utilized for studying pulmonary fibrosis and modulating H2O2 levels to slow down disease progression.

A sequentially activated bioluminescent probe for observation of cellular H2O2 production induced by cysteine

Kaiqing Ma et al.

Summary: A new caged luciferin probe Cy-Hy was reported as a sequentially activated probe for selectively and sensitively sensing l-Cys and H2O2, displaying fluorescence and bioluminescence responses towards the two analytes. Using this probe, cellular excess l-Cys-induced H2O2 up-regulation was observed for the first time in living MDA-MB-231 cells.

Fluorescent Probe for Monitoring Hydrogen Peroxide in COX-2-Positive Cancer Cells

Jiyeong Lee et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide is important in cellular functions and overproduction can lead to oxidative damage and diseases like cancer. The COX-2 enzyme plays a role in cancer development and resistance to treatment, so monitoring H2O2 changes in COX-2-expressing cancer cells is vital. A fluorescent probe composed of indomethacin and 1,8-naphthalimide boronate ester was able to image endogenous H2O2 in COX-2 overexpressing cancer cells.
