Characterisation of stress corrosion durability and time-dependent performance of cable bolts in underground mine environments

Saisai Wu et al.

Summary: With the increasing depth of underground mines, premature failures of cable bolts caused by stress corrosion cracking (SCC) have become more common. This study investigated the SCC failure processes of cold-drawn cable bolts used in underground reinforcement systems using acoustic emission (AE) techniques in simulated underground conditions. The damage evolution of the specimens was monitored in real-time using AE, while scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the fractographic features of the failed specimen. Through integrated analysis, three different stages of SCC failure processes were determined. The study confirms the potential of the AE technique and the designed testing system for real-time SCC monitoring in underground reinforcement systems.

Solving elastic wave equations in 2D transversely isotropic media by a weighted Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin method

Xi-Jun He et al.

Summary: In this study, the weighted Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method is extended to solve the elastic wave equations in 2D transversely isotropic media. The method shows good flexibility and applicability for dealing with undulating geometries and boundary conditions. Numerical examples demonstrate the correctness and effectiveness of the method in solving wave propagation problems in complex anisotropic medium.

The natural frequencies of AISI 316 stainless steel and analytical simulation of a Lamb wave excited by a point source

Kwang Bok Kim et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the characterization of acoustic emissions (AEs) generated during the tensile deformation of AISI type 316 stainless steel (SS). The AEs were found to have four frequency components and the propagation of the AE wave was simulated using a two-dimensional plate model.

An analytical benchmark for a 2D problem of elastic wave propagation in a solid

A. Chiappa et al.

Summary: This study examines the elastic wave propagation in a rectangular solid using both analytical and numerical approaches. Analytical model is shown to be a cost-effective benchmark for validating numerical models, with good quantitative agreement observed between the two. Additionally, an inverse use procedure for the analytical model is established and tested.

A reliability-based approach to determine the minimum detectable damage for statistical damage detection

Alexander Mendler et al.

Summary: This paper presents a formula to determine the minimum detectable damage based on ambient vibration data, considering uncertainties, sensitivities, and reliability requirements. The analysis shows that the minimum detectable damage depends on the uncertainty of the damage-sensitive feature, its sensitivity towards design parameters, and reliability requirements for the damage diagnosis results. The developed approach is accurate and robust for both simulated and real data, demonstrating its potential for practical applications.
