The Use of Capping Agents in the Stabilization and Functionalization of Metallic Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

Seidy Pedroso-Santana et al.

Summary: The study of nanoparticles and their application in biomedicine has gained global attention. Metallic nanoparticles have attracted significant interest due to their improved optical, electrical and magnetic properties, ease of manufacturing, small sizes, and easy functionalization. However, challenges such as particle aggregation, potential toxicity, and effective cell internalization still require active investigation. The use of capping agents to increase particle stability in dispersion, biocompatibility, and functionalization is considered a main strategy to overcome these challenges.

Refolding of denatured gold nanoparticles-conjugated bovine serum albumin through formation of catanions between gemini surfactant and sodium dodecyl sulphate

Rishika Aggrawal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the binding interactions between sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and conjugated gold nanoparticles-bovine serum albumin (BSA) and explores their refolding process. The results show that the relaxed bioconjugates renature by removing bound gemini surfactants as the SDS concentration increases. The presence of 12-8-12,2Br(-) leads to more refolding induced by SDS. These findings are significant for understanding distance-dependent optical biomolecular detection methodologies and physicochemical properties.

Are Smaller Nanoparticles Always Better? Understanding the Biological Effect of Size-Dependent Silver Nanoparticle Aggregation Under Biorelevant Conditions

Peter Belteky et al.

Summary: This study revealed that acidic pH and physiological electrolyte content universally induce aggregation of silver nanoparticles, with larger particles demonstrating higher resistance to aggregation compared to smaller counterparts. Extreme aggregation can lead to the complete loss of biological activity for AgNPs, highlighting the importance of colloidal stability. The findings suggest that aiming for the smallest possible nanoparticles may not be the best course of action in order to retain biological activity.
