iCanClean Improves Independent Component Analysis of Mobile Brain Imaging with EEG

Colton B. Gonsisko et al.

Summary: This study tested the application of the iCanClean algorithm in the analysis of mobile electroencephalography (EEG) data and found that it improves the decomposition of EEG data corrupted by walking motion artifacts. It increases the number of correctly identified components.

Characterizing and Removing Artifacts Using Dual-Layer EEG during Table Tennis

Amanda Studnicki et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that studying humans in real-world settings can improve the ecological validity of brain research. In this study, they used dual-layer EEG to record brain activity while participants played table tennis, and found that this method can provide more accurate data for investigating various aspects of visuomotor feedback, object interception, and performance monitoring. These findings contribute to the advancement of technological approaches for recording high fidelity brain dynamics in human behaviors involving whole body movement, which is valuable for brain science research.

A walk in the park? Characterizing gait-related artifacts in mobile EEG recordings

Nadine Svenja Josee Jacobsen et al.

Summary: Brain activity during natural walking outdoors can be captured using mobile EEG, but the recordings are often confounded by artifacts. This study expands on gait-related artifact features, presenting a seven-dimensional footprint that can be used to assess sensitivity to artifact reduction strategies. Evaluation of gait artifact handling showed improvements in topographies post-processing while maintaining unchanged morphologies and SNR, demonstrating the specificity of the techniques.

Motion artefact removal in electroencephalography and electrocardiography by using multichannel inertial measurement units and adaptive filtering

Christopher Beach et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new active electrode design based on inertial measurement units for EEG and ECG sensors to reduce motion artefacts during signal acquisition. The results show that the proposed design can effectively decrease motion contamination from EEG and ECG signals, although performance variations require more sophisticated signal processing for optimal use. This new instrumentation hardware provides a data-driven approach for artefact removal, allowing for in-the-wild EEG recordings.
