Quantifying the dynamic characteristics of indoor air pollution using real-time sensors: Current status and future implication

Jinze Wang et al.

Summary: Indoor air quality is important for human health, but traditional filter-based monitoring cannot capture the large spatiotemporal heterogeneity of indoor air pollution. Real-time monitoring has made significant strides in indoor air evaluation by enabling dynamic and massive analysis. Real-time sensors used in indoor air evaluation have advantages in high spatiotemporal resolution, 3-dimensional monitoring, pollution peak and source identification, and short-term health effect evaluation. However, challenges remain in sensor selection, performance, stability, and calibration. Future developments include sensors with high performance and low energy consumption, as well as simultaneous detection of multiple target air pollutants in indoor air monitoring.

Long-term evaluation of a low-cost air sensor network for monitoring indoor and outdoor air quality at the community scale

Rachel E. Connolly et al.

Summary: This study deployed 30 PurpleAir II sensors (12 outdoor and 18 indoor) in partnership with community members living near a major interstate freeway for air quality monitoring. The results showed that indoor sensors performed more reliably and had higher data completeness compared to outdoor sensors. All outdoor sensors exhibited high temporal correlation and spatial homogeneity.

Wearable system for outdoor air quality monitoring in a WSN with cloud computing: Design, validation and deployment

Sergio Palomeque-Mangut et al.

Summary: A wearable air quality monitoring platform with low-cost sensors was developed to measure pollutant levels and transmit data to the cloud for analysis. The platform was validated in experiments and field tests in Barcelona, demonstrating accurate measurements of air quality in both controlled laboratory conditions and outdoor environments.

Quantifying fugitive gas emissions from an oil sands tailings pond with open-path Fourier transform infrared measurements

Yuan You et al.

Summary: This study evaluated open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy as a potential alternative method for quantifying spatially representative fluxes for various pollutants from tailings ponds in the Alberta oil sands. The results showed that methane gradient fluxes were lower than nearby eddy covariance measurements, while inverse-dispersion fluxes had a high level of agreement. Significant NH3 and alkane emission fluxes were observed using the gradient fluxes method.
