Characterisation and calibration of low-cost PM sensors at high temporal resolution to reference-grade performance

Florentin M. J. Bulot et al.

Summary: Particulate Matter (PM) low-cost sensors (LCS) offer a cost-effective opportunity to improve the spatiotemporal resolution of airborne PM data. Previous studies have focused on hourly data reported by PM-LCS and have not fully addressed their limitations. However, PM-LCS provide measurements at finer temporal resolutions. Furthermore, government certifications for these sensors have shortcomings. To address these knowledge gaps, two models of PM-LCS were collocated with a certified PM monitor and characterized at 2 min resolution, revealing the limitations and improvements of the certification processes.

Particulate matter in a lockdown home: evaluation, calibration, results and health risk from an IoT enabled low-cost sensor network for residential air quality monitoring

Nicole Cowell et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of a low-cost Internet of Things (IoT) enabled indoor sensor network to assess variations in particulate matter in a lockdown home. The study found that particulate concentrations in multiple rooms of a typical suburban home in the UK exceeded the WHO Global Air Quality Guidelines for both 2021 and 2005, despite relatively low ambient concentrations.

Are dense networks of low-cost nodes really useful for monitoring air pollution? A case study in Staffordshire

Louise Boge Frederickson et al.

Summary: Air pollution exhibits regional variation that is influenced by people's time-activity patterns and paths. Low-cost air pollution sensor networks can provide detailed monitoring data, revealing differences between local and non-local pollution sources. Spectral analysis can determine the periodic variations in pollution levels.

Opinion: Insights into updating Ambient Air Quality Directive 2008/50/EC

Joel Kuula et al.

Summary: In response to increasing evidence of adverse health effects from air pollution, the World Health Organization has published new global air quality guidelines. The guidelines aim to provide a framework for policymakers to combat air pollution. The European Union plans to revise its current ambient air quality directive to align with the new WHO guidelines. This article presents an informed opinion on selected features of the directive that could benefit from reassessment, including air quality sensors, sampling points, and target pollution parameters.

Evaluating the PurpleAir monitor as an aerosol light scattering instrument

James R. Ouimette et al.

Summary: The study shows that the PMS sensor is equivalent to a cell-reciprocal nephelometer and can be used to measure the light scattering coefficient of aerosols linearly related to the volume scattering function. Through a physical-optical model, it was found that the PMS's response to particles > 0.3 µm decreases by about 75%, indicating that the PMS is not an optical particle counter.

Determination of the emission indices for NO, NO2, HONO, HCHO, CO, and particles emitted from candles

Anja Klosterkoether et al.

Summary: The study determined emission indices for different candles and found that candles may be a significant indoor source of HONO. The majority of emitted particles are in the size range of 7-15 nm, and three different emission modes were observed during burning candles.

Calibration of low-cost PurpleAir outdoor monitors using an improved method of calculating PM2.5

Lance Wallace et al.

Summary: Hourly PM2.5 measurements from PurpleAir monitors and nearby EPA stations in California were compared over an 18-month period, using an alternative calculation method (ALT) which outperformed Plantower's estimates. A calibration factor was empirically derived for PurpleAir estimates, showing different responses to wildfire smoke compared to normal ambient PM2.5.

Comparison of feature importance measures as explanations for classification models

Mirka Saarela et al.

Summary: Explainable artificial intelligence is an emerging research direction that helps users or developers understand the behavior of machine learning models. Different feature importance measurement methods can lead to varying results, and a combination of multiple explanation techniques is recommended for more reliable results, particularly in critical cases such as false negatives.
