Proposal: Apparatus for Sensing the Effect of Surface Roughness on the Surface Resistance of Metals

Kostiantyn Torokhtii et al.

Summary: The root mean square surface roughness R(q) of metals is detrimental in microwave applications, and R-q characterization methods are widely used and of great interest. A new dielectric loaded resonator (DR) design is proposed to evaluate surface resistance variations of samples with different R-q, aiming to improve measurement accuracy affected by repeatability. Sensitivity and accuracy of the measurement method are analyzed to assess the possibility of using this new DR design for highly accurate surface resistance measurements sensitive to R(q) variations.

Development and Investigation of High-Temperature Ultrasonic Measurement Transducers Resistant to Multiple Heating-Cooling Cycles

Vaida Vaskeliene et al.

Summary: Usually, ultrasonic transducers made of PZT and silver electrodes are used for non-destructive testing at high temperatures. However, the poor adhesion between PZT and silver can lead to damage or malfunction. Soldering is a common bonding method, but additional metal layers (copper) are needed to protect the silver. Mathematical modeling can predict the performance of an ultrasonic transducer at high temperatures.

Ultrasonic Energy and Data Transfer through a Metal-Liquid Multi-Layer Channel Enhanced by Automatic Gain and Carrier Control

Raphael B. Pereira et al.

Summary: This paper presents an ultrasonic system capable of simultaneous power transfer and data transmission through a barrier composed of two flat steel plates separated by a fluid layer. The system adopts frequency modulation and a novel technique for automatic gain and automatic carrier control. The system can transfer data at a rate of 19,200 bps and simultaneously transfer 66 mW of power through the barrier, which completely supplies a pressure and temperature sensor. The proposed system is promising for monitoring applications such as oil wellbore structural health monitoring systems.

STFT spectrogram based hybrid evaluation method for rotating machine transient vibration analysis

Gabor Manhertz et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a method to extract vibration components from high-resolution STFT spectrograms for transient analysis on rotating machines. An improved STFT algorithm efficiently allocates and utilizes computational memory. The resulting grey-scale image is used for further analysis, with the possibility of real-time condition monitoring based on basic vibration measurement.
