Source-sink connectivity: a novel interictal EEG marker for seizure localization

Kristin M. Gunnarsdottir et al.

Summary: There are over 15 million epilepsy patients worldwide, many of whom have drug-resistant epilepsy. Surgical treatment is often successful, but the success rate varies due to the lack of validated biological markers of the epileptogenic zone. This study aimed to develop a new network-based interictal iEEG marker of the epileptogenic zone by analyzing interictal iEEG data. The algorithm developed in this study showed promising accuracy in identifying epileptogenic regions and predicting surgical outcomes, outperforming clinicians' predictions.

Quantification of Epileptogenic Network From Stereo EEG Recordings Using Epileptogenicity Ranking Method

Harilal Parasuram et al.

Summary: The study proposes a method called Epileptogenicity Rank (ER) based on Stereo EEG (SEEG) for precise localization of the epileptogenic zone. The ER successfully differentiated brain regions involved in seizure onset and optimized the localization threshold for neocortical and mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, showing high sensitivity and specificity.

Neural fragility as an EEG marker of the seizure onset zone

Adam Li et al.

Summary: Neural fragility, a networked dynamic system biomarker, is developed as a more robust tool for localizing seizures in epilepsy patients compared to traditional features. The study shows that neural fragility outperforms clinicians in predicting surgical outcomes, suggesting its potential as an EEG biomarker for the seizure onset zone.
