The quest for resilience: The Chilean practice of seismic design for reinforced concrete buildings

Summary: Chilean society expects immediate occupancy performance of buildings during large earthquakes, despite seismic design codes only requiring a scope of life safety performance level. The observed seismic resilience of buildings in Chile is a result of limiting damage, and providing resilient structural performance under extreme seismic events is a current challenge.
