Evaluation of bimodal microstructures in selective-laser-melted and heat-treated Ti-6Al-4V

Tom McKenna et al.

Summary: As-built, SLM-printed Ti-6Al-4V parts have brittle microstructures due to the formation of metastable a'-phase martensite. Post-processing heat treatments are needed to alleviate residual stress and decompose the martensite. This research evaluates the effect of unconventional 'cyclical' heat treatment parameters on grain morphology, phase composition, and mechanical performance, and compares it to a typical lamellar microstructure.

Impact Toughness of As-Built and Heat-Treated Near-β Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr-1Zr Alloys Fabricated by Selective Laser Melting and Electron Beam Melting

Zhiqiang Cao et al.

Summary: The effects of heat treatment on the microstructure evolution and impact toughness of SLM and EBM Ti55531 alloy specimens were systematically investigated, revealing that heat treatment can enhance the impact toughness of the specimens by improving their microstructure; hot isostatic pressing effectively eliminates defects in the specimens, thereby improving the impact toughness of Ti55531 alloy.

Plasticity, localization, and damage in ferritic-pearlitic steel studied by nanoscale digital image correlation

T. Vermeij et al.

Summary: The evolution of deformation from plasticity to localization to damage in ferritic-pearlitic steel was investigated through nanometer-resolution microstructure-correlated SEM-DIC strain mapping. Key plasticity mechanisms in ferrite and pearlite and their relation to microstructural arrangement were revealed. Two contrasting mechanisms for damage initiation in pearlite were identified, which potentially results in macroscale fracture. Recommendations for damage resistant ferritic-pearlitic steels are proposed based on the findings.

Novel insights on the near atomic scale spatial distributions of substitutional alloying and interstitial impurity elements in Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Souvik Sahoo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial distributions of substitutional alloying elements and interstitial impurities in Ti-6Al4V and Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloys on a near atomic scale. The results reveal that aluminum and vanadium atoms enrich alpha and beta phases, respectively, due to partitioning effects between these phases. Oxygen atoms preferentially distribute within the alpha phase alongside other interstitial impurities, while vanadium atoms reside near impurity-rich regions in both alloys. Size differences and lattice distortions are held responsible for the observed atomic scale elemental distributions and interrelations within the alpha phase.

Deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V microstructures under uniaxial loading: Equiaxed Vs. transformed-β microstructures

Jyoti S. Jha et al.

Summary: The dual-phase titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V can be thermomechanically treated to produce various microstructures affecting its mechanical properties. The equiaxed microstructure exhibits the highest elongation, while the alpha'-lath morphology shows the lowest elongation. The deformation mechanisms of slip, twin, and fracture depend on the microstructure morphology in Ti-6Al-4V.
