The hot compressive deformation behavior of cast Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr alloys with and without LPSO phase in their initial microstructures

H. T. Jeong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of intragranular lamellae-shaped long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase on the hot compressive deformation behavior and deformation mechanisms of Mg-8.2Gd-3.8Y-1.1Zn-0.4Zr alloy. The results show that the presence of LPSO phase increases the activation energy for plastic flow (Qc) and affects the deformation behavior and high-temperature strength of the alloy.

Influence of alloying element segregation at grain boundary on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-Zn alloy

Xiaoying Qian et al.

Summary: The role of alloying element segregation at grain boundary on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-1Zn alloy with Ca, Ce, and Nd addition is investigated. The segregation of alloying elements at grain boundary affects the mobility of grain boundaries and ultimately the grain size, leading to refinement of the grain size and improved mechanical properties. The addition of Ca and Ce simultaneously improves the strength and ductility, and Ce is shown to be particularly effective in enhancing the mechanical properties of Mg-Zn alloy.

Hot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of Mg-Gd-Y (-Sm)-Zr alloys

Hao Pang et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior of Mg-Gd-Y(-Sm)-Zr alloys during high-temperature uniaxial compression was investigated. The dynamic recrystallization critical strain was calculated and verified. The hot deformation activation energy and constitutive equation were calculated, and the effect of Sm on microstructure evolution was analyzed. The results showed that the addition of Sm increased flow stress and delayed dynamic recrystallization.

First-principle study of the basal-plane stacking fault energies of ternary Mg alloys

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: This study calculates the generalized stacking fault energies (GSFEs) of the intrinsic fault I-2 for the basal slip system in the Mg-Al/Sn/Gd-X systems using first-principle calculations. The GSFEs in these systems are generally lower than that of pure Mg. The unstable stacking fault energies strongly depend on the substituted sites of alloying elements in the lattice. A multiple regression analysis provides a quantitative prediction of the unstable stacking fault energies based on three strong correlation factors.

Deformation twinning in octahedron-based face-centered cubic metallic structures: Localized shear-force dipoles drive atomic displacements

Hengfei Gu et al.

Summary: Twinning is a common mechanism in nanostructured materials that imparts favorable mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. In this study, we discovered a new zero-net-strain path for deformation twinning in nanoparticles with a specific structure. Based on our observations, we proposed a loading criterion for deformation twinning.

Significant improvement in yield stress of Mg-Gd-Mn alloy by forming bimodal grain structure

Peng Peng et al.

Summary: Fabricating bimodal grain structure by adding various Mn contents in Mg alloys is an effective way to improve mechanical properties. Among the alloys studied, Mg-1.0Gd-1.5Mn shows the best mechanical properties, with significantly improved tensile yield stress and ultimate tensile stress. The enhancement in strength is mainly attributed to the bimodal grain structure formed.
