Cytokinins are involved in regulation of tomato pericarp thickness and fruit size

Lijun Gan et al.

Summary: This study provides genetic evidence that endogenous cytokinins (CKs) play a role in pericarp growth and fruit size regulation in tomatoes. Overexpression of the CK-inactivating enzyme gene AtCKX2 led to reduced pericarp thickness and smaller fruit size, primarily due to decreased cell division. Transcriptome profiling also revealed changes in gene expression involved in cell division, expansion, and hormone signaling pathways. These findings highlight the importance of CKs in regulating pericarp development and fruit size in tomatoes.

Apple Fruit Size QTLs on Chromosomes 8 and 16 Characterized in 'Honeycrisp'-Derived Germplasm

Sarah A. Kostick et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic basis of fruit weight in the apple variety 'Honeycrisp'. QTLs associated with fruit size were identified on chromosomes 8 and 16, accounting for 15% of the phenotypic variation. The study also found non-additive interactions at and across QTLs. These findings have implications for parent selection and the development of DNA tests in apple breeding programs.

The MdAux/IAA2 Transcription Repressor Regulates Cell and Fruit Size in Apple Fruit

Haidong Bu et al.

Summary: Auxin-responsive gene MdAux/IAA2 plays an important role in regulating apple fruit size. Overexpression of MdAux/IAA2 results in smaller fruit size, weight, and cell size, while silencing MdAux/IAA2 leads to an increase in fruit weight and cell size. The findings suggest that the high auxin content suppresses the expression of MdAux/IAA2, thereby affecting fruit development.

QTLs and candidate genes analyses for fruit size under domestication and differentiation in melon (Cucumis melo L.) based on high resolution maps

Qun Lian et al.

Summary: Two high-density genetic maps were constructed using whole-genome resequencing with two F-2 segregating populations and two loci for fruit size were identified on chromosome 11 in WAP and chromosome 5 in MAP. An auxin response factor and a YABBY transcription factor were inferred to be the candidate genes for both loci.
