Systematic evaluation of horizontal gene transfer between eukaryotes and viruses

Nicholas A. T. Irwin et al.

Summary: This study systematically characterized viral-eukaryotic gene exchange, identifying thousands of transfers and revealing their frequency, taxonomic distribution, and predicted functions. The findings highlight the impact of virus-host interactions on evolutionary changes, as well as common strategies employed by viruses to manipulate hosts, such as metabolic reprogramming, proteolytic degradation, and extracellular modification. Additionally, the study implicates genetic exchange in the early evolution and diversification of eukaryotes, particularly through viral-derived glycosyltransferases impacting a wide range of structures.

A novel co-graft tannin-based flocculant for the mitigation of harmful algal blooms (HABs): The effect of charge density and molecular weight

Zijun Yang et al.

Summary: The study developed a series of co-graft tannin-based flocculants with different charge densities and molecular weights for algae removal. Results showed that the flocculants could efficiently remove algal cells and EOM over a wide pH range. Charge density and molecular weight significantly affected flocculation performance and floc characteristics, with higher CD leading to higher removal efficiency and higher MW resulting in larger and more compact flocs. The study suggests that these tannin-based flocculants have broad application prospects in managing cyanobacteria bloom.

Biochar Effectively Inhibits the Horizontal Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes via Restraining the Energy Supply for Conjugative Plasmid Transfer

Yajing Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of biochar on the conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). It was found that biochar pyrolyzed at higher temperatures had a stronger inhibitory effect on the transfer of ARGs. This inhibition was primarily caused by down-regulation of plasmid transfer gene expression and decreased cell membrane permeability due to restricted ATP energy supply. On the other hand, coating biochar with fulvic acid weakened this inhibitory effect by providing more ATP and enhancing intracellular reactive oxygen species defense.

Triclosan Promotes Conjugative Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes to Opportunistic Pathogens in Environmental Microbiome

Ji Lu et al.

Summary: Triclosan significantly enhances the conjugative transfer of the RP4 plasmid among activated sludge communities, promoting both intergenera and intragenera transfer. Triclosan also facilitates the transfer of the RP4 plasmid to opportunistic human pathogens. The mechanism behind triclosan-mediated conjugative transfer involves oxidative stress, increased membrane permeability, and the activation of the SOS response.

Bisphenols Promote the Pheromone-Responsive Plasmid-Mediated Conjugative Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Enterococcus faecalis

Yutong Yang et al.

Summary: Chemical pollution in the environment enhances the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), posing a threat to human health and ecological safety. Bisphenols (BPs) have been found to significantly promote the conjugation of ARGs mediated by plasmids in bacteria. Bisphenol A (BPA) upregulates pheromone expression, promotes bacterial aggregation, and even directly activates conjugation.

Potential of coagulation to remove particle-associated and free-living antibiotic resistome from wastewater

Kai-Feng Yu et al.

Summary: The optimum chemical dosages for PAC, PAFC, and PAC combined with PAM in removing total ARGs and MGEs were found to be 40.5, 64.7, and 50.0 mg/L, respectively. It was also observed that more coagulants were needed to remove FL-ARGs compared to PA-ARGs, and the removal efficiencies of size-fractionated ARGs by flocculation could be influenced by various factors such as coagulant type, dosage, coagulant aid, Zeta potential, and microorganism lifestyle (PA or FL).

A review on detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater in light of the current knowledge of treatment process for removal of viral fragments

Sarawut Sangkham

Summary: The global COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 has raised concerns about the presence of the virus in untreated wastewater, highlighting the importance of efficient wastewater treatment processes to prevent its further spread. Various viral concentration techniques are used to detect and quantify SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater samples, emphasizing the need for continued research into disinfectants, environmental conditions, and the efficacy of treatment procedures in controlling the transmission of the virus. Monitoring SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater samples through wastewater-based epidemiology provides valuable real-time data for understanding the COVID-19 pandemic at different levels of society.

Summary: Zero valent iron (ZVI) has been shown to reduce antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in microbes by inhibiting horizontal transfer of ARGs and decreasing proliferation of resistant strains. However, a higher dosage of 20 g/L ZVI had negligible effects on ARGs reduction, possibly due to iron-catalyzed oxidative damage and reduced physiological activity.

Synthesising tannin-based coagulants for water and wastewater application: A review

Azreen Ibrahim et al.

Summary: Tannin, a natural water-soluble polyphenol present in most plant cells, is widely accepted and applied as a plant-based coagulant in water and wastewater treatment, effectively removing pollutants such as turbidity, colorants, suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, algae, and heavy metals. The effectiveness of tannins as a coagulant is associated with their chemical structure and the degree of tannin modification, which are influenced by the plant source from which they are extracted.
