Microplastics: A Matter of the Heart (and Vascular System)

Elisa Persiani et al.

Summary: Plastic waste and mismanagement have led to the generation of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) which can be harmful to aquatic and terrestrial organisms. When ingested by fish, MPs/NPs can cause inflammatory responses, altered blood parameters, compromised immune system, and damage to vascular structure. These plastic particles can also interact with circulating cells in mammals, leading to inflammation, genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and impaired cardiovascular function. The impact of MPs/NPs on the cardiovascular system warrants further analysis.

Combined Effects of Microplastics and Benzo[a]pyrene on the Marine Diatom Chaetoceros muelleri

Summary: This study investigates the effects of microplastics and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) on the growth of Chaetoceros muelleri and their interactions. The results show that both microplastics and B[a]P inhibit the growth of C. muelleri, with stronger inhibition caused by polyethylene terephthalate (mPET). The combined effects of microplastics and B[a]P significantly enhance the inhibitory effects. These pollutants also reduce the content of photosynthetic pigments and inhibit the antioxidative enzymatic system of microalgae.

Charge-specific adverse effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on zebrafish (Danio rerio) development and behavior

Miaomiao Teng et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics, especially positively charged ones, have demonstrated neurotoxicity in fish, leading to developmental and behavioral impairments. The presence of differently charged nanoplastics in the brain and gastrointestinal tract of zebrafish was observed, with positively charged nanoplastics showing stronger toxicity and apoptosis in the brain, as well as greater neurobehavioral impairment. The specific interaction between positively charged nanoplastics and the NMDA2B neurotransmitter receptor contributes to these behavioral variations.

Competitive and cooperative sorption between triclosan and methyl triclosan on microplastics and soil

Xian Chen et al.

Summary: This study explores the interaction between triclosan (TCS) and its primary metabolite, methyl triclosan (MTCS), on different sorbents. Results show that MTCS has higher sorption capacity and affinity than TCS, with competitive sorption observed between them. The presence of TCS can facilitate the sorption of MTCS at high concentrations, while the effects of competitive and cooperative sorption between multiple contaminants vary with solution pH. These findings are important for evaluating the environmental risk of microplastics and TCS in soil.

Effects of Copper Exposure on Oxidative Stress, Apoptosis, Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress, Autophagy and Immune Response in Different Tissues of Chinese Mitten Crab (Eriocheir sinensis)

Summary: High concentrations of copper pose a threat to aquatic animals, but the response mechanisms of crustaceans to Cu2+ exposure are not well understood. This study investigated the physiological and molecular changes in Chinese mitten crabs after Cu2+ exposure. The results showed that Cu2+ exposure decreased antioxidative capacity and promoted lipid peroxidation in different tissues. It also induced apoptosis and autophagy, and triggered an immune response. The toxicity of Cu2+ may be associated with the activation of ERK, AMPK, and TLR2-MyD88-NF-kappa B pathways.
