Summary: This study investigates the impact of invasive plant expansion on the soil microbiome. The results show that the invasion significantly alters the structure and composition of the soil microbiome, decreasing beta-diversity but increasing alpha-diversity. The invasion also leads to a more complex and robust network, with a higher proportion of keystone species and co-occurring associations. Additionally, the invasion-present soils have a wider habitat niche breadth, with a higher proportion of habitat generalists and lower proportion of habitat specialists. The importance of stochasticity in community assembly increases in the invasion-present soils.

Tree decline and mortality following pathogen invasion alters the diversity, composition and network structure of the soil microbiome

Summary: The loss of tree health, caused by exotic pathogens, can have significant impacts on the diversity and function of soil microbial communities in invaded forests. This study found that pathogen-driven tree decline led to an increase in taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of bacteria and fungi in the soil, but also a reduction in tree-symbiotic fungi and beneficial Proteobacteria. The topology of soil microbial networks was also altered, with lower connectivity and higher modularity observed in declining tree neighborhoods. Restoring a functionally diverse and highly connected soil microbiome is crucial for the recovery of disturbed systems.
