Nanoplastics and Arsenic Co-Exposures Exacerbate Oncogenic Biomarkers under an In Vitro Long-Term Exposure Scenario

Irene Barguilla et al.

Summary: The widespread presence of plastic waste and its derivatives, micro- and nanoplastics, raises concerns about potential health risks. This study examines the interaction between arsenic and polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPLs) and their joint effects. The results show that continuous co-exposure to both pollutants enhances DNA damage and aggressive features of cell transformation. This study highlights the importance of considering the long-term effects of emerging contaminants like MNPLs and the behavior of mixtures in risk assessment.

The adsorption of arsenic on micro- and nano-plastics intensifies the toxic effect on submerged macrophytes

Na Tang et al.

Summary: Little is currently known about the adsorption behaviors of metalloids on microplastics and their complex toxic effects on aquatic plants. This study investigated the adsorption behaviors of arsenic on different types of microplastics with varying particle sizes. The results showed that arsenic entered the internal surface adsorption site of microplastics and the adsorption capacity increased with the concentration of microplastics. The presence of nanoplastics increased the absorption of arsenic on aquatic plants and caused more severe damage to leaf structures.

Size-dependent impact of polystyrene microplastics on the toxicity of cadmium through altering neutrophil expression and metabolic regulation in zebrafish larvae

Li Qin et al.

Summary: This study found that micro-polystyrene particles and 100 nm polystyrene particles have different impacts on the toxicity of cadmium on zebrafish larvae, altering neutrophil expressions. Metabonomics analysis revealed that the two types of particles induced different metabolisms in combination with cadmium treatment. Additional biomarkers of immune impact should be explored to understand the toxicological mechanisms of nanoplastics and reduce environmental effects.

Keng Po Lai et al.

Summary: The production of synthetic compounds and environmental pollutants pose risks to the ecosystem and health, with endocrine disrupting chemicals regarded as a major global issue. Zebrafish are widely used in aquatic toxicology, and omics approaches are employed to study toxicities of EDCs.

Sublethal and lethal effects of the imidacloprid on the metabolic characteristics based on high-throughput non-targeted metabolomics in Aphis gossypii Glover

Nannan Lv et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of neonicotinoid pesticide Imidacloprid on Aphis gossypii using high-throughput non-targeted metabolomics, revealing sublethal and lethal effects at LC10 and LC90 doses. Changes in metabolic pathways showed high energy consumption, excitotoxicity, and oxidative stress in both LC10 and LC90 groups, with PD detected only in the LC90 group. Non-targeted metabolomics successfully revealed the physiological effects of neonicotinoid pesticide stress on A. gossypii.

Toxicity mechanisms of arsenic compounds in aquatic organisms

Eunjin Byeon et al.

Summary: Arsenic, a toxic metalloid, is widely distributed in aquatic environments predominantly in its inorganic form, with its acute and chronic toxicities being dependent on its chemical speciation and concentration. While biotransformation mechanisms and speciation of arsenic have been studied, further research is needed on the relationships among speciation, toxicity, and bioavailability in biological systems.

The regulatory roles of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase in cardiovascular disease

Yulin Zou et al.

Summary: Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs) are widely distributed in organisms, providing raw materials for protein biosynthesis and playing critical roles in inflammation, immune responses, and tumorigenesis. The recently identified aminoacylation process is closely linked to the regulation of protein activity and functions.
