Chemicals of emerging concern in coastal aquifers: Assessment along the land-ocean interface

Daniel Gutierrez-Martin et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the presence and distribution of a wide range of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) in a Mediterranean coastal aquifer near Barcelona, Spain, and identifies potential markers and tracers for anthropogenic contamination in groundwater and seawater. The results highlight the importance of submarine groundwater discharge as a source of CECs and suggest new approaches for studying the fate and transport of pollutants.

Environmental concentrations of Roundup in combination with chlorpromazine or heating causes biochemical disturbances in the bivalve mollusc Unio tumidus

Vira Khoma et al.

Summary: Bivalve molluscs are well-recognized bioindicators of freshwater pollution, but their ability to indicate specific xenobiotics in complex exposures remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of the pesticides Roundup and the antipsychotic drug chlorpromazine on the mussel Unio tumidus, revealing that complex exposures can intensify harmful effects and abolish individual response traits. The use of multi-marker expertise with integrated indices showed benefits in evaluating the effects of complex exposures.

Fernanda Silva dos Santos et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the biological effects of environmental pollutants on the brown mussel Perna perna, including metals, hydrocarbons, and emerging pollutants. Biomarkers at molecular to physiological levels can be used to assess the degree of coastal pollution. The study found that oxidative status, genotoxicity, and cytotoxicity indicators in mussels are effective biomonitoring methods.

A bifunctional enzyme belonging to cytochrome P450 family involved in the O-dealkylation and N-dealkoxymethylation toward chloroacetanilide herbicides in Rhodococcus sp. B2

Hong-ming Liu et al.

Summary: This study identified Rhodococcus sp. B2 as capable of degrading the chloroacetamide herbicide pretilachlor and characterized a gene cluster (EthABD(B2)) essential for this degradation. The study also revealed a novel metabolite and demonstrated the role of a P450 family oxygenase in the degradation process. These findings provide valuable microbial resources for the remediation of chloroacetamide herbicides-contaminated sites.

An Overview of Antibiotics as Emerging Contaminants: Occurrence in Bivalves as Biomonitoring Organisms

Elena Baralla et al.

Summary: This review discusses the increasing use of antibiotics globally and their accumulation in the environment as contaminants of emerging concern. Bivalves are proposed as biomonitoring organisms for antibiotic residues due to their global presence and filtration capacity. Studies have shown antibiotics presence in bivalves across European, American, and Asian coasts, with notable detection of macrolides, sulfonamides, and quinolones. Further investigations are needed to prevent antimicrobial resistance and reduce the risk of seafood consumption.
