An Evaluation of the Atmospheric Instability Effect on Wildfire Danger Using ERA5 over the Iberian Peninsula

Luana C. C. Santos et al.

Summary: The Fire Weather Index (FWI) is widely used for fire danger assessment, but lacks an atmospheric instability term. The enhanced FWI (FWIe) incorporating atmospheric instability in the form of CHI was developed. Climatological and evolution analysis using ERA5 data showed higher FWI values over central Iberia influenced by climate types, topography, and land cover. FWIe improved the assessment of meteorological fire danger in higher-risk conditions and was more affected by atmospheric instability. Case studies verified the usefulness of FWIe in wildfire development and suggested a focused deployment of suppression mechanisms.

Understanding the Complicated Relationship Between ENSO and Wintertime North Tropical Atlantic SST Variability

Feng Jiang et al.

Summary: The El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a robust relationship with North Tropical Atlantic (NTA) sea surface temperature (SST) variability during winter, when previous summer NTA SST conditions are taken into account. The absence of this relationship during winter is mainly due to different NTA preconditions. Understanding the complicated ENSO-wintertime NTA SST relationship has implications for climate predictability.

A perfect storm: An anomalous offshore phytoplankton bloom event in the NE Atlantic (March 2009)

Afonso Ferreira et al.

Summary: Primary productivity in oceanic regions is stable, but can vary significantly near coasts due to mesoscale processes; Anomalous phytoplankton blooms, such as the one observed off the Western Iberian Coast in 2009, are novel and influential; The causes and impacts of such blooms, influenced by long-term and short-term factors, are crucial for understanding ecosystem dynamics in coastal upwelling regions.

Future Amplification of Sea Surface Temperature Seasonality Due To Enhanced Ocean Stratification

Anila Rani Jo et al.

Summary: The amplification of future sea surface temperature seasonal cycle has important implications for marine ecosystems. The underlying physical mechanisms are found to be increasing upper ocean stratification and shoaling of the mixed layer. This finding provides valuable insight into future changes in marine ecosystems.

Wind stilling ceased in the Iberian Peninsula since the 2000s

Eduardo Utrabo-Carazo et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the wind speed changes in Spain and Portugal from 1961 to 2019. It found that the stilling phenomenon has ceased and there might be a weak reversal phenomenon in recent decades. The increase in atmospheric thermal stability and the northward shift of the jet stream are proposed as the main causes of the stilling phenomenon in this region. The study improves our understanding of wind changes and highlights the importance of regional assessments.

Relationship of the Warming of Red Sea Surface Water over 140 Years with External Heat Elements

Xuehai Liu et al.

Summary: Using historic data, this study analyzed variations in sea surface temperature (SST), sea surface air temperature, and air-sea heat flux of the Red Sea and its adjacent seas over a 140-year period (1876-2019). The results showed that the SST of the Red Sea has been increasing at an average rate of 0.043 degrees C/decade, with an accelerated rate in recent decades. The study also revealed that the Red Sea's temperature rise was primarily caused by horizontal heat input from the warming water of the Gulf of Aden, rather than local air temperature rise. However, the accelerated rise in air temperature over the sea in recent decades has decreased the sensible heat flux, which might contribute to the Red Sea warming.

Observation-based Sea surface temperature trends in Atlantic large marine ecosystems

Augustin Kessler et al.

Summary: Variations in sea surface temperature play a significant role in driving the abundance of marine species in Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs). This study provides a long-term trend analysis of sea surface temperature in 17 LMEs of the Atlantic Ocean using in-situ data. The results show a persistent warming trend in all considered LMEs, with the LMEs of the North Atlantic warming faster than those of the South Atlantic.

Trend and change-point detection analyses of rainfall and temperature over the Awash River basin of Ethiopia

Yitea Seneshaw Getahun et al.

Summary: As a result of climate change and socioeconomical activities, the Awash River basin has experienced changes in rainfall and temperature trends. The decrease in rainfall and increase in temperature have negatively impacted agriculture in the region, highlighting the need for integrated water management and early detection of potential rainfall anomalies.

Innovative trend analysis of spatio-temporal variations of rainfall in India during 1901-2019

R. N. Singh et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatio-temporal trends of rainfall in different meteorological sub-divisions of India over the last 119 years. Significant increasing trends in monsoon and annual rainfall were observed in most sub-divisions, while decreasing trends were found in some areas, particularly in winter rainfall. The Innovative trend analysis (ITA) method was more sensitive in detecting hidden trends missed out by traditional methods.
