Anaerobic soil disinfestation for the management of soilborne pathogens: A review

Everaldo Antonio Lopes et al.

Summary: Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is an ecological alternative to chemical soil fumigation, which is achieved by incorporating easily decomposable organic materials, irrigation to saturation, and soil cover with impermeable plastic to combat plant pathogens. The main mechanisms involve accumulation of toxic anaerobic decomposition products, antagonism by anaerobic organisms, and lack of oxygen.

Sexual reproduction trait expressions of grassland species along a gradient of nitrogen: phosphorus stoichiometry

Shuqiong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of nitrogen (N): phosphorus (P) stoichiometry on sexual reproduction performance in grassland species. The results suggest that under P limitation/co-limitation, grassland species tend to have earlier flowering time and longer seed stalk and seed panicle, but shorter flowering period and fewer flowers per individual. Soil pH and moisture also show significant correlations with sexual reproduction performance.

Heavy metal and nutrient concentrations in top- and sub-soils of greenhouses and arable fields in East China-Effects of cultivation years, management, and shelter

Li Wan et al.

Summary: Greenhouse vegetable production in China is a growing concern due to food quality and safety worries. This study found that greenhouse soils have higher concentrations of micronutrients and macronutrients compared to adjacent arable land. The concentrations of heavy metals in greenhouse soils were lower, except for copper and zinc in the topsoil. The study also revealed the direct relationship between soil nutrient concentrations in greenhouses and the application of fertilizers and agrochemicals.

Impact of anaerobic soil disinfestation on seasonal N2O emissions and N leaching in greenhouse vegetable production system depends on amount and quality of organic matter additions

Waqas Qasim et al.

Summary: Greenhouse vegetable production systems in China suffer from excessive fertilizers and irrigation, leading to soil degradation and disease spread. Incorporating large amounts of organic nitrogen fertilizer during anaerobic soil disinfestation increases environmental nitrogen losses without improving crop productivity.

Drip fertigation with straw incorporation significantly reduces N2O emission and N leaching while maintaining high vegetable yields in solar greenhouse production

Yiming Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that drip irrigation with reduced fertilisation combined with straw incorporation can significantly reduce N2O emissions and nitrogen leaching in solar greenhouse vegetable production systems, without affecting crop productivity, providing a water and nutrient-saving production method for farmers.

Microbial deterioration and restoration in greenhouse-based intensive vegetable production systems

Weishou Shen et al.

Summary: Soil microbial community and diversity are crucial for sustaining soil ecosystem health, but they are threatened by excessive use of synthetic fertilizers and continuous monocropping. This leads to decreased N utilization efficiency and more soil-borne plant diseases in greenhouse-based vegetable systems. Measures like rational fertilization, rotation or intercropping, and cultivating cover crops are important for restoring soil microbial communities and improving ecosystem health.

Irrigation amount dominates soil mineral nitrogen leaching in plastic shed vegetable production systems

Haofeng Lv et al.

Summary: Excessive irrigation rather than nitrogen input was found to be the main cause of significant nitrogen leaching in plastic shed vegetable production. Drip fertilization significantly reduced nitrogen leaching without compromising yield, while straw addition also contributed to reducing nitrogen leaching. Optimal irrigation schemes, combined with precise drip fertilization and straw addition, are recommended for sustainable and environmentally-friendly plastic shed vegetable production.

Anaerobic soil disinfestation with incorporation of straw and manure significantly increases greenhouse gases emission and reduces nitrate leaching while increasing leaching of dissolved organic N

Yiming Zhao et al.

Summary: Greenhouse vegetable production in China often involves excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers and flood irrigation, leading to soil degradation and spread of soil borne diseases. Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is applied as a countermeasure, but the use of organic C sources and manure in this process can result in significant greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen leaching. Optimizing irrigation schemes and advising against the use of chicken manure during ASD period can help reduce environmental losses and improve sustainability in greenhouse vegetable production.
