Comprehensive evaluation of the long-term effect of Cu2+ on denitrifying granular sludge and feasibility of in situ recovery by phosphate

Wen-Jie Ma et al.

Summary: The study assessed the effect of Cu2+ on denitrifying granular sludge and found that nitrogen removal efficiency decreased significantly at 10 mg/L Cu2+, with inhibited enzyme activity and metabolism, and loss of denitrifying bacteria. However, the deteriorated state was reversed by phosphate addition, leading to recovery of nitrogen removal efficiency and enzyme activity.

Anammox sludge preservation: Preservative agents, temperature and substrate

Dong-Qi Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the preservation of anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria (AnAOB) and evaluated the effects of different preservative agents at different temperatures. The results showed that using betaine or glycerol at low temperatures was the optimal strategy for preserving the performance of anammox granular sludge. Despite changes in granule properties and microbial community structures during the preservation, the overall performance of the anammox granules could be effectively restored.

High atmospheric wet nitrogen deposition and major sources in two cities of Yangtze River Delta: Combustion-related NH3 and non-fossil fuel NOx

Zhili Chen et al.

Summary: This study examined nitrogen deposition in urban and suburban areas in the Yangtze River Delta, finding higher deposition rates in urban areas compared to suburban areas. The delta N-15 values of NH4+ and NO3- in precipitation increased with precipitation pH, indicating the influence of ambient acidity. Combustion-related NH3 emissions and non-fossil fuel NOx emissions were identified as significant sources in urban areas.

Daehee Choi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of vacuum lyophilization for the long-term preservation of anammox microorganisms. Skim milk was found to be the most effective cryoprotectant, but the technique caused damage to the quorum sensing system. The activation of the AHL-mediated quorum sensing system was applied to improve the recovery of anammox activity.

Qian-Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study assessed the influence of hydrazine and hydroxylamine on the performance and microbial community structures of the CANON process. The results showed that both hydrazine and hydroxylamine promoted the activity of specific bacteria and inhibited others. The CANON process could operate stably without hydrazine, but required hydroxylamine for performance maintenance.

Exploring the feasibility and potential mechanism of synergistic enhancement of sludge dewaterability by ultrasonic cracking, chitosan re-flocculation and sludge-based biochar adsorption of water-holding substances

Yahong Yang et al.

Summary: A method combining ultrasonic cracking, chitosan re-flocculation, and sludge-based biochar adsorption was proposed to enhance sludge dewatering. This combined conditioning significantly improved the filtration performance of sludge, reducing specific resistance to filtration, capillary suction time, and cake moisture content. The analysis of sludge characteristics showed that ultrasonic, chitosan, and sludge-based biochar exhibited synergistic effects, altering the structure and properties of sludge and improving its dewatering efficiency.
