Effect of Glutamic Acid and 6-benzylaminopurine on Flower Bud Biostimulation, Fruit Quality and Antioxidant Activity in Blueberry

Maria Itzel Perez-Leon et al.

Summary: Blueberry is a popular fruit with high demand and consumption due to its bioactive compounds and high antioxidant capacity. The application of glutamic acid (GLU) and 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) as biostimulants positively influenced flower bud sprouting, fruit quality, and antioxidant content in blueberries. Specifically, 500 mg L-1 GLU and 10 mg L-1 6-BAP increased flower bud number, while 500 mg L-1 GLU and 20 mg L-1 6-BAP resulted in fruits with higher flavonoid, vitamin C, and anthocyanin content, as well as enhanced activity of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase enzymes. Therefore, the application of these biostimulants effectively enhances the yield and quality of blueberries.

Influence of polyvinyl chloride microplastic on chromium uptake and toxicity in sweet potato

Muhammad Amjad Khan et al.

Summary: The extensive use of plastics and rapid industrialization has raised concerns about microplastics (MPs). MP can pose environmental risks when combined with heavy metals. However, there is insufficient research on the combined effects of MPs and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) on plants. In this study, a 14-day hydroponic experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of PVC MPs and Cr(VI) alone and in combination on sweet potato. The findings show that the combined application of Cr(VI) and PVC MPs significantly affected plant growth parameters, while PVC MPs alone did not have a significant impact. The presence of PVC MPs promoted the accumulation of Cr(VI) in sweet potato plants, leading to severe toxic effects on their physio-biochemical characteristics.

Nitric oxide and brassinosteroids enhance chromium stress tolerance in Glycine max L. (Merr.) by modulating antioxidative defense and glyoxalase systems

Farwa Basit et al.

Summary: Chromium contamination in agricultural soils poses a significant threat to human and plant health, leading to reduced plant growth and crop yields. This study investigated the potential beneficial effects of 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) and nitric oxide (NO) in mitigating chromium-induced phytotoxicity in soybean seedlings. The combined treatment of EBL and NO showed the greatest alleviation of chromium stress, reducing chromium uptake and translocation, as well as improving water content, light-harvesting pigments, and photosynthetic parameters. Additionally, the hormones enhanced enzymatic and non-enzymatic defense mechanisms, reducing membrane damage and electrolyte leakage, and reducing the accumulation of methylglyoxal, a toxic compound. Further research is needed to validate the effectiveness of EBL and NO in chromium-contaminated soils and assess the cost-benefit ratio and yield losses.
