Colloidal stability and aggregation behavior of CdS colloids in aquatic systems: Effects of macromolecules, cations, and pH

Bingcheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the colloidal stability of CdS colloids in different aqueous systems, exploring the effects of electrolyte concentration and solution pH. It was found that increased electrolyte concentration destabilized CdS colloids, while higher solution pH stabilized them. Electron microscopy and spectroscopy confirmed the strong interaction between macromolecules and CdS colloids, forming a protective layer called NOM corona. The interaction between macromolecules and CdS influenced the aggregation behavior in different solutions. The findings enhance our understanding of the fate and transport of CdS colloids in the environment, providing insights into their potential risks.

A model-based analysis of electrodialysis fouling during pulsed electric field operation

Bram De Jaegher et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of reduced concentration polarization during pulsed electric fields (PEF) on fouling suppression. A modeling approach is used to simulate the evolution of concentration profiles in a ternary solution, and the effect of pulse parameters on boundary layer concentration is studied. The results demonstrate the counterproductivity of low-frequency pulses and the trade-off between current efficiency and fouling suppression.

Mitigation of membrane fouling by whey protein via water hammer

Mohamed Aslam et al.

Summary: In this study, a transient back-pressure (water hammer) was applied to mitigate fouling in ultrafiltration of whey proteins. The water hammer effect was effective in reducing membrane fouling, with up to 84% flux enhancement achievable depending on operating conditions. However, the effectiveness of water hammer decreased at high transmembrane pressures and high feed concentrations where fouling was more severe.

Enhanced oil droplet aggregation and demulsification by increasing electric field in electrocoagulation

Saiguo Yang et al.

Summary: Electrocoagulation is an efficient technology for removing oil-in-water emulsions, with higher electric field intensity aiding in oil removal and accelerating the aggregation of oil droplets. Increasing current density in EC processes results in higher Al3+ dosage and larger electric field intensity, which is conducive to oil droplet demulsification. These findings provide insight and a theoretical basis for improving oil removal by EC processes.

Multistage electrodialysis for desalination of natural seawater

Gijs Doornbusch et al.

Summary: Electrodialysis (ED) is a promising technology for seawater desalination, but the impact of multivalent ions on membrane scaling and resistance has been overlooked. This study investigated the influence of multivalent ions in seawater on the desalination performance of multistage ED, finding that CEMs with preferential removal of multivalent ions were more effective in removing magnesium ions and achieving lower energy consumption and stable system performance.
