Wastewater-based monitoring of illicit drugs in Cyprus by UPLC-MS/MS: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

M. Psichoudaki et al.

Summary: The outbreak and control measures of COVID-19 had an impact on the use of illicit drugs in the Republic of Cyprus. The use of amphetamine and methamphetamine was not significantly affected during the lockdown period, but decreased when restrictions were eased. The limitations on social interactions during quarantine led to a sharp decrease in the use of MDMA and cocaine, but their use increased significantly when activities reopened.

Pharmaceutical pollution of the world's rivers

John L. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: Environmental exposure to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can have negative effects on ecosystems and human health. A global-scale study of API pollution in rivers highlights the highest concentrations in sub-Saharan Africa, south Asia, and South America, primarily in low- to middle-income countries with poor wastewater and waste management infrastructure. The most frequently detected APIs include carbamazepine, metformin, and caffeine, with some concentrations exceeding safe levels for aquatic organisms. Pharmaceutical pollution poses a global threat to environmental and human health and has implications for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Assessment of a wide array of organic micropollutants of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants in Greece: Occurrence, removals, mass loading and potential risks

Anna Ofrydopoulou et al.

Summary: This study presents the contamination profile of multi-class emerging contaminants in two wastewater treatment plants in the region of Thessaloniki, Greece, highlighting higher influent concentrations compared to effluent, interesting trends for illicit drugs, and ecotoxicological risk assessment. The findings underscore the need to intensify surveillance programs for receiving water bodies and investigate toxicity to non-target organisms.

Contaminants of emerging concern in the Basque coast (N Spain): Occurrence and risk assessment for a better monitoring and management decisions

Oihana Solaun et al.

Summary: Studying the presence of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment is crucial for assessing potential harmful effects on aquatic ecosystems and establishing corresponding environmental quality standards. Monitoring in the Basque Country coast showed that six out of the nineteen monitored substances exceeded their Predicted No-Effect Concentrations, indicating potential environmental risks.

Occurrence, removal and mass loads of antiviral drugs in seven wastewater treatment plants with various treatment processes

Li Yao et al.

Summary: Antiviral drugs are commonly found in wastewater treatment plants, with varying removal efficiencies and potential ecological risks. The estimated high usage and emissions of these drugs in Guangdong province, China, could pose risks to aquatic environments. Further research on wastewater treatment technologies is needed based on the findings from this study.
