Charge-dependent negative effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on Oryzias melastigma under ocean acidification conditions

Yufei Chen et al.

Summary: Marine nanoplastics (NPs) have become a global concern due to their harmful effects on the marine environment. This study investigated the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on the embryotoxicity of differently charged NPs to marine medaka. It was found that OA reversed the toxicity of positively and negatively charged NPs towards embryos.

Activity of antioxidant enzymes in Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to tar: Integrated response of different organs as pollution biomarker in aquaculture areas

Vladimir Dobal et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the antioxidant enzymes response of Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to a tar mixture, revealing tissue-specific differences in response to oxidative species. The study found that gills have high affinity for reactive species, while digestive gland and mantle tissue have high antioxidant efficiency. Most enzymes showed dose-and time dependent response to tar exposure, with influence of dose-time interaction. The results suggest that the integrated antioxidant response of different organs from bioindicator species is important in toxicological studies.

Immunotoxicity of pentachlorophenol to a marine bivalve species and potential toxification mechanisms underpinning

Weixia Zhang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the immunotoxicity of pentachlorophenol (PCP) on a representative bivalve species and analyzed its impacts on metabolism, energy supply, detoxification, and oxidative stress. The results showed that PCP exposure significantly hampered the immunity of blood clams, disrupted energy metabolism, altered detoxification gene expressions and enzyme activities, and induced oxidative stress. These findings suggest that PCP may pose a threat to the immunity of marine invertebrates and deserve more attention.

Immune responses to ZnO nanoparticles are modulated by season and environmental temperature in the blue mussels Mytilus edulis

Fangli Wu et al.

Summary: Increased production and release of ZnO nanoparticles can have toxic effects on marine ecosystems and aquatic organisms, with immune cells of blue mussels showing different responses to nZnO exposure in winter and summer. The immune response in mussels was dysregulated by temperature variation in summer, but not in winter. This suggests seasonal acclimatization and warming may have detrimental effects on the innate immunity of mussel populations in summer.

Oxidative stress induced by nanoplastics in the liver of juvenile large yellow croaker Larimichthys crocea

Li'ang Li et al.

Summary: Toxicological studies have shown that exposure to nanoplastics (NPs) can lead to increased oxidative stress responses in juvenile Larimichthys crocea, affecting the survival rate and antioxidant enzyme activities in the liver. Higher concentrations of NPs had more pronounced effects on oxidative stress and survival rates, indicating potential negative impacts on fishery productivity.

The toxic impacts of microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on haematic parameters in a marine bivalve species and their potential mechanisms of action

Shuge Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that both MPs and PAHs in the marine ecosystem may have adverse effects on the haematic parameters of blood clams, including decreased total haemocyte count, changes in haematic composition, and inhibition of haemocyte phagocytosis. Exposure to MPs and PAHs may lead to toxic impacts on haematic parameters by increasing intracellular ROS contents, causing LPO and DNA damage, reducing haemocyte viability, and disrupting important molecular signaling pathways. Moreover, coexposure to MPs and PAHs resulted in more severe adverse impacts on all parameters, indicating a significant synergistic effect.

Heat hardening enhances mitochondrial potential for respiration and oxidative defence capacity in the mantle of thermally stressed Mytilus galloprovincialis

Ioannis Georgoulis et al.

Summary: Ectotherms exposed to environmental temperature extremes may increase anaerobic metabolism and oxidative stress, but marine organisms can develop defensive strategies. Hardening processes can enhance the heat tolerance and antioxidant defense of marine organisms like mussels, improving adaptive strategies and reducing mortality rates under elevated temperatures. Further research on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of heat resistance in marine organisms is necessary.
