Lead exposure induced developmental nephrotoxicity in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) via oxidative stress-based PI3K/AKT pathway inhibition and NF-& kappa;B pathway activation

Gaixia Zhang et al.

Summary: Birds, especially Japanese quails, exposed to lead (Pb) contamination in drinking water showed an increase in kidney weight and a decrease in body weight and length. Pb exposure induced renal dysfunction, including abnormal uric acid metabolism, oxidative stress, apoptotic increment, and aggravated inflammation. The study revealed the nephrotoxic effects of Pb on birds through structural damages, disruption of purine metabolism, oxidation imbalance, apoptosis, and activation of the inflammatory pathway.

Rong Shen et al.

Summary: This study provides valuable insights into the potential risk and mechanism of hepatic toxicity and fibrosis induced by microplastics. It demonstrates that even at low concentrations, microplastics can enter hepatocytes and cause liver damage. Microplastic exposure results in DNA damage and inflammation, leading to liver fibrosis. Moreover, inhibiting the relevant signaling pathway can alleviate liver fibrosis.

Polystyrene micro- and nano-particle coexposure injures fetal thalamus by inducing ROS-mediated cell apoptosis

Diqi Yang et al.

Summary: The potential toxicity of plastic particles to fetuses was investigated in this study by orally administering polystyrene particles to pregnant mice. The particles were found to distribute in the digestive tract, brain, uterus, and placenta of maternal mice, and to infiltrate the fetal thalamus. Maternal exposure to these particles resulted in anxiety-like behavior and reduced GABA synthesis in the brains of the progenies. Antioxidant treatment alleviated the oxidative damage caused by the particles and rescued the anxiety-like behavior. The study highlights the negative effects of plastic particles on fetuses and their potential health risks.
