Comparative chemical and non-contact bioleaching of ion-adsorption type rare earth ore using ammonium sulfate and metabolites of Aspergillus niger and Yarrowia lipolytica to rationalise the role of organic acids for sustainable processing

Li Shen et al.

Summary: Ion-adsorption type rare earth ore contains medium and heavy REEs, which are strategic mineral resources. Chemical leaching is restricted due to environmental concerns, while bioleaching shows promise. This study investigates the use of metabolites from Aspergillus niger and Yarrowia lipolytica to leach REEs, comparing them with ammonium sulfate. The results show that Aspergillus niger (glucose as carbon source) achieved the highest leaching efficiency of 91%, followed by Aspergillus niger (sucrose as carbon source) with 66%, and Yarrowia lipolytica with only 34%. The findings are relevant for the future development of ion-adsorption type rare earth ore.

Recovery of light rare earth elements, cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium from alluvial gold mining waste from the Bagre-Nechi mining district in Colombia using acid leaching, oxalate precipitation and calcination

Luver Echeverry-Vargas et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the leaching conditions of hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid for the maximum extraction of cerium, lanthanum, and neodymium from a dephosphorized monazite concentrate. The experiments showed that sulfuric acid performed better in terms of extraction efficiency. The addition of hydrogen peroxide further enhanced the dissolution of rare earth elements in sulfuric acid. The recovered rare earths can be converted to oxides through precipitation with oxalic acid and subsequent calcination.

A novel method: Nickel and cobalt extraction from citric acid leaching solution of nickel laterite ores using oxalate precipitation

Widi Astuti et al.

Summary: An alternative method for recovering nickel and other valuable metals from nickel laterite ores is proposed and evaluated in this study. The method involves a leaching step using citric acid to dissolve nickel and cobalt, and an oxalate precipitation step to precipitate nickel from the leach filtrate. The results showed that nickel and cobalt can be dissolved using 1 M citric acid solution at 80 °C, a pulp density of 100 g/L, and a leaching duration of 5 h. Complete precipitation of nickel can be achieved at 80 °C, 500 rpm stirring speed, and a precipitation duration of 3 h. The method can produce Mixed Oxalate Precipitate (MOP) with a purity of 78%.

A green and efficient technology to recover rare earth elements from weathering crusts

Gaofeng Wang et al.

Summary: Heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) are crucial metals for many key technologies, but they are scarce. Conventional mining techniques for ion-adsorption deposits have limited adoption due to severe environmental damage and low recovery efficiency. This study presents an innovative REE mining technique, electrokinetic mining (EKM), which enables green, efficient, and selective recovery of REEs from weathering crusts.

Green citric acid in the sorption process of rare earth elements

Katarzyna Burdzy et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of citric acid as a biodegradable complexing agent on the sorption process of La(III), Nd(III), and Ho(III) ions were investigated. The adsorption capacity was analyzed by considering factors such as pH, molar ratio, contact time, initial concentrations, and temperature. The results showed that the Purolite S957 chelating ion exchanger had the highest adsorption capacity. The study also evaluated the reusability of ion exchangers and simulated the behavior of fixed bed columns using dynamic experiments.

Effects of contaminant metal ions on precipitation recovery of rare earth elements using oxalic acid

Wencai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of contaminant metal ions on the precipitation efficiency of selected rare earth elements using oxalic acid as a precipitant. The findings showed that trivalent metal ions had a significant influence on the precipitation efficiency, while divalent metal ions had minimal effects. Additionally, anionic species were found to negatively affect the precipitation recovery of rare earth elements.

Separation of rare earth elements from a South American ionic clay lixivium by sequential precipitation

John Anawati et al.

Summary: The study found that in the desorption process of South American ionic clay, impurities and REEs can be selectively sequentially precipitated by stepwise addition of ammonium bicarbonate. During this process, ammonium bicarbonate acts first as a pH adjustor to remove impurities, and then as both a carbonate ion source and a pH adjustor to precipitate REEs. The primary factors controlling REE precipitation are pH, carbonate, and sulfate concentrations.

Column leaching of ion adsorption rare earth ore at low ammonium concentration

Qiyuan Shi et al.

Summary: This study utilizes ammonium citrate as a new leaching agent for ion adsorption rare earth ore (IARE-ore) leaching, aiming to reduce the concentration of leaching agent and improve the recovery rate of rare earth elements (REEs). The results indicate that high REEs recovery can be achieved at relatively low ammonium concentration using ammonium citrate, and both the cation and anion components of ammonium citrate contribute to the leaching process.

Simulated bioleaching of ion-adsorption rare earth ore using metabolites of biosynthetic citrate: An alternative to cation exchange leaching

Xiaoyu Meng et al.

Summary: Ion-adsorption rare earth ore (IRE-ore) is a strategic resource that satisfies almost all market demand for heavy rare elements. The commonly used ammonium sulfate technology has environmental drawbacks, leading to challenges for the IRE-ore industry. Bioleaching, with its low cost and eco-friendliness, presents potential prospects for the clean and efficient utilization of IRE-ore. This study found that Aspergillus niger and Yarrowia lipolytica, along with citrate as the main microbial metabolite, were effective in bioleaching IRE-ore.
