Assessing the Sorting Efficiency of Plastic Packaging Waste in an Italian Material Recovery Facility: Current and Upgraded Configuration

Giovanni Gadaleta et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the performance of a material recovery facility (MRF) in Southern Italy and proposes an upgrade to improve the sorting efficiency of plastic waste. It is found that the current MRF performs well for PET and PE bottles (80.2% and 92.8% respectively), but achieves lower efficiency for mixed or flexible packaging (55-50%). The upgrade primarily addresses the weakness in the 2D flow sorting line and significantly increases the production of recyclable waste.

Expanding the collection portfolio of plastic packaging: Impact on quantity and quality of sorted plastic waste fractions

Martijn Roosen et al.

Summary: Expanding the curbside collection system for household plastic packaging is important for achieving the recycling targets set by the European Union. The study investigates the effects of this expansion on the quality and quantity of sorted plastic waste fractions. Results show that while the collection rate of plastic packaging increases, it is still insufficient to meet the recycling target. Further improvements in recycling technologies and packaging design are needed to increase plastic recycling rates.

Modelling incineration for more accurate comparisons to recycling in PEF and LCA

Tomas Ekvall et al.

Summary: When recycling is beneficial for the environment, life cycle assessments should incentivize recycling and the use of recycled materials. Currently, modeling approaches may create incorrect climate incentives, but this risk can be reduced by allocating the benefits of energy recovery to the lifecycle where the energy is used.

Flows of post-consumer plastic packaging in Germany: An MFA-aided case study

Caterina Picuno et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive investigation on the current state of the German post-consumer plastic packaging sector, revealing the intrinsic inefficiencies in the waste value chain. The research findings show that the per capita generation of PCPP waste in Germany is 26.3 kg, with a separate collection efficiency of 74.8%. The study highlights that material losses at the sorting stage are mainly due to complex packaging designs.
