Hotspots of geogenic arsenic and manganese contamination in groundwater of the floodplains in lowland Amazonia (South America)

Caroline M. C. de Meyer et al.

Summary: Arsenic enrichment in groundwater resources in deltas and floodplains of large sediment-rich rivers poses a worldwide natural hazard to human health. The high spatial variability of arsenic concentrations in affected river basins hinders the implementation of cost-effective mitigation strategies. Linking the chemical composition of groundwater with topography and fluvial geomorphology shows promise in predicting arsenic pollution on a regional scale. In the Amazon basin, arsenic contamination in wells was found to be correlated with fluvial dynamics.

A critical review of arsenic occurrence, fate and transport in natural and modified groundwater systems in The Netherlands

Pieter J. Stuyfzand et al.

Summary: Arsenic is a common trace element in groundwater, and its mobility is controlled by natural processes, sedimentary and geochemical environment, and human activities. The main controlling factor for arsenic mobility in natural coastal dune systems is the redox state of groundwater. Manipulation of groundwater systems and pollution can also lead to elevated arsenic concentrations. Additionally, temperature increase in aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) systems and deposition of muddy sediments in surface water bodies can further enhance arsenic mobilization. Methane and ammonium concentrations may serve as risk indicators for elevated arsenic levels in some fresh groundwater systems in the Netherlands.

The role of electron donors in arsenic-release by redox-transformation of iron oxide minerals - A review

Oliver C. Moore et al.

Summary: The contamination of groundwater by geogenic arsenic affects the health of tens of millions of people, especially in South and Southeast Asia. The primary cause of the contamination in highly reducing alluvial and deltaic aquifers of South and Southeast Asia is thought to be microbial reduction of Fe(III) and As(V) to Fe(II) and As(III), respectively. Understanding the identity and source of electron donors driving the system is key to understanding the Fe(III)/As(V) reduction process in aquifers.

Groundwater arsenic content in quaternary aquifers of the Red River delta, Vietnam, controlled by the hydrogeological processes

Jolanta Kazmierczak et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between arsenic groundwater concentrations and hydrogeological processes in the proximal part of the Red River delta in Vietnam. The results showed that the sea regression and sedimentary structures play a role in groundwater flow paths and arsenic contamination. The study also found that arsenic contamination is not solely caused by groundwater abstraction, but also by natural flow processes and erosion of clay deposits.

Tracing sources and transformations of ammonium during river bank filtration by means of column experiments

Gustavo Covatti et al.

Summary: The study found that higher temperatures and lower infiltration rates can lead to increased ammonium concentrations during riverbank filtration. However, in the later phases of the experiments, ammonium concentrations continually decreased, partially due to the consumption of easily degradable organic material. Additionally, in rivers with high nitrate concentrations like the Elbe, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) may play a significant role in reducing the formation of ammonium during riverbank filtration.

Summary: This study explores the geospatial relationship between basinal geomorphology and the distribution of arsenic in the Bengal Delta Plain, revealing heterogeneous patterns of arsenic distribution across different areas within the region. Statistical analysis identified varying contamination levels in different river basins, with geomorphological features playing a role in influencing arsenic distribution.

Summary: Iron minerals play a crucial role in hosting arsenic in As-contaminated deltaic sediments, leading to a severe health threat for millions of people worldwide. By analyzing the geochemistry and mineralogy of sediment cores from the Red River delta in Vietnam, this study provides new insights into the complex dynamics of arsenic mobilization in reducing aquifers of South and Southeast Asia.

Pleistocene sands of the Mississippi River Alluvial Aquifer produce the highest groundwater arsenic concentrations in southern Louisiana, USA

Omolola A. Akintomide et al.

Summary: Geostatistical and geospatial analysis techniques were employed to evaluate the relationships between high arsenic, iron, and manganese concentrations in groundwaters from the Pleistocene Mississippi River Alluvial Aquifer in south-central Louisiana. The study found that the reductive dissolution of Fe/Mn oxides/oxyhydroxides is the likely source of arsenic, and this process is influenced by the recharge of the aquifer by Mississippi River water and microbial respiration.

Sources and behavior of ammonium during riverbank filtration

Gustavo Covatti et al.

Summary: Ammonium is an undesirable substance in riverbank filtration schemes due to complications in post-treatment. Based on case studies from 40 sites worldwide, sources and behavior of ammonium during RBF were investigated. Typical concentrations of ammonium in bank filtrate range from 0.1 to 1.7 mg/l, with organic nitrogen mineralization in the riverbed being the main source and nitrification in the riverbed being the main sink. Transformations in the riverbed play a critical role in determining ammonium concentrations.

Arsenic behavior in groundwater in Hanoi (Vietnam) influenced by a complex biogeochemical network of iron, methane, and sulfur cycling

Martyna Glodowska et al.

Summary: The fate of arsenic in groundwater is determined by multiple microbial and abiotic processes, with fermentation and methanogenesis found to be important processes influencing the mobilization of arsenic. The study highlights the role of methane-producing bacteria and methane-oxidizing bacteria in promoting arsenic mobilization, as well as the importance of sulfate-reducing and Fe(II)-/As(III)-oxidizing bacteria in acting as a sink for arsenic. Overall, a complex network of microbial and biogeochemical processes must be considered to better understand the behavior of arsenic in groundwater.

Carbon and methane cycling in arsenic-contaminated aquifers

Emiliano Stopelli et al.

Summary: In a high-arsenic aquifer near Hanoi, stable isotope analysis and hydrogeochemical parameters revealed the role of methane cycling and DOC infiltration in arsenic heterogeneity. Methanogenesis and methane oxidation were found to actively contribute to the distribution of arsenic in groundwater, highlighting the importance of these processes in high-arsenic aquifers.
