Toxicity assessment of polyethylene microplastics in combination with a mix of emerging pollutants on Physalaemus cuuieri tadpoles

Amanda Pereira da Costa Araujo et al.

Summary: Recent studies have indicated that microplastic pollution can exert additional stress on amphibian populations. However, our understanding of the effects of microplastics on amphibians, especially in combination with other emerging pollutants, is limited. This study aimed to assess the potential toxicity of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs), alone or in combination with a mixture of pollutants, on the health of Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles. The results showed that exposure to the combination of PE-MPs and pollutants induced enhanced stress responses in tadpoles, although the uptake and accumulation of PE-MPs in the animals was reduced. This study provides new insights into the risks posed by microplastics coexisting with other pollutants in aquatic environments.

Fluoride exposure causes behavioral, molecular and physiological changes in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) and their offspring

Melike Karaman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of fluoride exposure on anxiety and circadian clock changes in zebrafish at the molecular level. The results showed that fluoride exposure through various sources causes genotoxic effects, oxidative damage, and impaired cognitive abilities. Parental fluoride exposure disrupted the circadian rhythm, causing anxiety-like behaviors and decreased levels of brain antioxidant enzymes and melatonin. The offspring also showed negative effects, including delay in hatching, increased death and body malformations, and decreased blood flow velocity and locomotor activity. Furthermore, increased apoptosis rate, ROS level, and lipid accumulation were observed in the offspring.

Bioaccumulation/bioconcentration of pharmaceutical active compounds in aquatic organisms: Assessment and factors database

Maria del Carmen Gomez-Regalado et al.

Summary: There is growing evidence that certain pharmaceuticals in the environment pose a potential risk to ecosystems through biota exposure. This review aims to summarize the research and factors involved in assessing the bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals in aquatic organisms, and provide a critical review of the bioconcentration and bioaccumulation factors of these compounds in different trophic levels. The most commonly studied pharmaceuticals are antidepressants, followed by diclofenac and carbamazepine. Field studies yield more reliable data than laboratory tests for assessing the true environmental impact.

Ferroptosis contributes to nickel-induced developmental neurotoxicity in zebrafish

Zuo Wang et al.

Summary: Nickel (Ni) is a widely used heavy metal that can cause environmental pollution and health hazards. The neurotoxic effects induced by exposure to environmentally relevant levels of Ni in zebrafish larvae are closely related to ferroptosis, a form of iron-mediated cell death. The activation of the ferroptosis pathway and iron dyshomeostasis are implicated in these Ni-induced neurotoxic effects.

Toxicity assessment of SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides in combination with a mix of pollutants on zebrafish adults: A perspective study of behavioral, biometric, mutagenic, and biochemical toxicity

Italo Nascimento Freitas et al.

Summary: The study found that the SARS-CoV-2 virus in sewage has no effect on the behavior, biology, or mutation of zebrafish. However, biochemical responses were observed in certain organs. Zebrafish adults exposed to viral fragments and a mix of pollutants showed higher toxicity than the other groups.

Fluoxetine-induced neurotoxicity at environmentally relevant concentrations in adult zebrafish Danio rerio

Jose Manuel Orozco-Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the neurotoxic effects of fluoxetine on the brain of zebrafish through behavior assessment, oxidative stress determination, and acetylcholinesterase activity measurement. The results showed that fluoxetine exposure disrupted fish behavior, reduced acetylcholinesterase activity, and induced oxidative stress response. These findings suggest that environmentally relevant concentrations of fluoxetine can impair fish behavior and make them more susceptible to predation.

Pyroptosis in host defence against bacterial infection

Dominik Brokatzky et al.

Summary: Pyroptosis is a regulated form of cell death characterized by cell lysis and the release of pro-inflammatory molecules. It plays a crucial role in bacterial infection by promoting an inflammatory response and eliminating intracellular pathogens. Recent studies using various bacterial pathogens have enhanced our understanding of pyroptosis and its importance in host defense.

Short-term exposure of the mayfly larvae (Cloeon dipterum, Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) to SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides and other emerging pollutants: A new threat for the aquatic environments

Italo Nascimento Freitas et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the possible effects of SARS-CoV-2-derived peptides combined with multiple pollutants on aquatic organisms using mayfly larvae as a model system. The results showed that exposure to the peptides led to higher mortality and lower body condition index in the larvae, as well as reduced enzyme activity and increased nitrite production. The study highlights the potential ecotoxicological risk associated with the spread of the new coronavirus in aquatic environments.

Pioneer neutrophils release chromatin within in vivo swarms

Hannah M. Isles et al.

Summary: Neutrophils are rapidly recruited to inflammatory sites where they form clusters through a process called neutrophil swarming. Study using transgenic zebrafish larvae shows that neutrophil swarming is a conserved process in zebrafish immunity and involves the release of cellular components by pioneer neutrophils to initiate the swarming process.
