Ubiquitous karst hydrological control on speleothem oxygen isotope variability in a global study

Pauline C. Treble et al.

Summary: Karst hydrology has a significant impact on the oxygen isotopic compositions of cave speleothems, and global analysis suggests that inconsistencies in speleothem-based reconstructions of past hydroclimates are common worldwide. The influence of fractures on flowpaths is identified as the primary driver of within-cave speleothem and dripwater oxygen isotopic variability.

The transport mechanism of carbon isotopes based on 10 years of cave monitoring: Implications for paleoclimate reconstruction

Yidong Li et al.

Summary: Monitoring carbon isotopes in Jiguan Cave in Central China for 10 years revealed that cave ventilation, soil air CO2, and hydrological conditions influence seasonal variability in delta C-13(DIC) values, with trace element ratios of cave water sensitive to local hydrological conditions. The study covered two El Nino cycles, showing that extreme drought conditions impact delta C-13(DIC) and trace element ratios of cave water. The study suggests that delta C-13 may be a reliable proxy for recording regional environmental changes, particularly precipitation changes, and indirectly reflect ENSO impacts.

Deciphering the hydroclimatic significance of dripwater δ13CDIC variations in monsoonal China based on modern cave monitoring

Jian-Jun Yin et al.

Summary: The delta C-13 values of dripwaters are significantly influenced by hydroclimatic constraints, seasonality, water sources, and interactions between water-CO2-rock. Changes in local climate, particularly in summer monsoonal rainfall, have a significant impact on the annual mean delta C-13 values of dripwaters. This demonstrates that variations in dripwater delta C-13 can reflect changes in regional monsoonal precipitation over interannual timescales, making it a valuable proxy of monsoon rainfall variability across East Asia.

Historic Yangtze flooding of 2020 tied to extreme Indian Ocean conditions

Zhen-Qiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The record strong Indian Ocean Dipole event in 2019 played a key role in the severe flooding of the Yangtze River in 2020 by deepening the thermocline and warming the Indian Ocean. This led to anomalous anticyclone in the lower troposphere over the Indo-Northwest Pacific region and intensified the upper-level westerly jet over East Asia, causing heavy summer rainfall in the Yangtze Basin.

Summary: The study indicates that the sea surface temperature in the western North Atlantic in May is a good predictor for the June rainfall anomalies in the Yangtze River Valley. It also highlights the significant impacts of three-ocean SSTs on extreme weather and climate events in China.

Anthropogenic influence on extreme Meiyu rainfall in 2020 and its future risk

Tianjun Zhou et al.

Summary: In the summer of 2020, Eastern China experienced excessive Meiyu rainfall, leading to frequent extreme rainfall events. Anthropogenic influences, such as greenhouse gas emissions and aerosols, have been found to significantly impact the probability of extreme rainfall events, with greenhouse gases increasing the likelihood and aerosols decreasing it. Further research suggests that with continued emission of GHGs and reduction of aerosols, similar heavy rainfall events are projected to occur more frequently, emphasizing the importance of implementing effective mitigation measures.

Understanding the role of SST anomaly in extreme rainfall of 2020 Meiyu season from an interdecadal perspective

Yuanyuan Guo et al.

Summary: The extreme Meiyu rainfall in the Yangtze River valley in 2020 was found to be related to the interdecadal warming of sea surface temperature anomaly in the tropical western Indian Ocean. This interdecadal warming may have partly contributed to the heavy rainfall in June 2020.

Stalagmite carbon isotopes suggest deglacial increase in soil respiration in western Europe driven by temperature change

Franziska A. Lechleitner et al.

Summary: The temperate region of western Europe underwent significant climatic and environmental change during the last deglaciation. This study quantifies and removes the effects of prior calcite precipitation and bedrock dissolution on the delta(13)Cspel signal to derive changes in respired delta C-13, shedding new light on soil respiration during past climatic transitions.

Understanding the linkage between regional climatology and cave geochemical parameters to calibrate speleothem proxies in Madagascar

Ny Riavo G. Voarintsoa et al.

Summary: This study monitored Anjohibe Cave in NW Madagascar to understand the link between regional climatological changes and cave responses. The results show fast air-to-air transfer, delayed signal transfer from rainfall to drip water, and CaCO3 precipitation during winter-summer transition. The findings suggest that drip waters in Anjohibe Cave are capable of registering changes in the surrounding environment, which is important for reconstructing paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental changes.
