Kinetic and molecular evidence for DON transformation in the deep vadose zone: Important implications for soil nitrogen budgeting and groundwater nitrate management

Zeliang Shen et al.

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of considering dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) transformation in the deep vadose zone for soil nitrogen budgeting and groundwater nitrate management. The results showed that ignoring DON and its transformation could lead to high uncertainty regarding estimated nitrogen leaching losses to groundwater. The study provided kinetic and molecular evidence for DON transformation in the deep vadose zone, revealing that DON was as significant as inorganic nitrogen for nitrogen stocks in the soil.

A parsimonious model for predicting the NO3--N concentration in shallow groundwater in intensive agricultural areas using few easily accessible indicators and small datasets based on machine learning

Panlei Wang et al.

Summary: Groundwater nitrate poses a health risk to humans, and monitoring its quality is time-consuming and expensive. To overcome these challenges, a parsimonious model was developed using accessible predictors and small datasets based on RF, NN, and SVM algorithms. The results showed that even with limited predictors and a small dataset, the models achieved good precision in predicting the nitrate concentrations. The model provides technical support for the rapid and low-cost monitoring of nitrate pollution in shallow groundwater.

Distributions, origins, and health-risk assessment of nitrate in groundwater in typical alluvial-pluvial fans, North China Plain

Lin Gan et al.

Summary: The study found that the distribution of high nitrate levels in groundwater in the North China Plain alluvial-pluvial fans is mainly influenced by land use types and aquifer types, originating primarily from domestic sewage, animal waste, and fertilizers. The proportion of groundwater samples with high health risks from nitrate is significantly correlated with the level of urbanization, highlighting the necessity of strengthening sewage treatment and limiting excessive groundwater exploitation to ensure sustainable management of groundwater and drinking water safety.

Assessment of the hydrochemistry, water quality, and human health risk of groundwater in the northwest of Nansi Lake Catchment, north China

Zongjun Gao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the formation mechanism and water quality of groundwater in the northwest of Nansi Lake Catchment through mathematical statistics, hydrochemical analysis, and entropy weighted water quality index (EWQI), and evaluated the human health risk of nitrate. The results showed that groundwater hydrochemistry is mainly influenced by water-rock interactions, with different groundwater quality among the three groups and overall good water quality, with low human health risk of nitrate.

Predictive modeling of groundwater nitrate pollution and evaluating its main impact factors using random forest

Song He et al.

Summary: This study successfully predicted groundwater nitrate concentrations in the Yinchuan Region using a random forest model, identifying factors such as distance to the Yellow River, meteorological elements, water level elevation, urban land, and arable land as key influencers. Urban land was found to have a greater impact on groundwater nitrate concentrations compared to arable land due to intense urban land expansion from 2000 to 2015.

Assessment of farmers' water and fertilizer practices and perceptions in the North China Plain

Xiulu Sun et al.

Summary: Irrigation and fertilization are crucial for increasing crop yield, but their excessive use leads to depletion of water resources and water pollution. The introduction of fertigation technology combined with modern irrigation has been promoted in the North China Plain, but farmers are reluctant to adopt it. Farmers are generally satisfied with their current irrigation and fertilization practices, despite low application efficiency and distribution uniformity. Lack of knowledge, small-scale farming conditions, and high costs are the main obstacles for fertigation adoption.

Dual roles of dissolved organic nitrogen in groundwater nitrogen cycling: Nitrate precursor and denitrification promoter

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different types of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) on nitrate accumulation in groundwater and reveals the complex roles DON plays in nitrogen cycling processes. The researchers established quantitative correlations between microbial indicators and nitrogen content. The findings provide guidance for environmental risk evaluation and control strategies for nitrate pollution in groundwater.

Deep soil nitrogen storage slows nitrate leaching through the vadose zone

Julie N. Weitzman et al.

Summary: Nitrogen fertilizer applications are crucial for agricultural yield, but unused nitrogen can lead to surplus storage in soil or contamination of water sources. Monitoring the transport of water and nitrate in farmland revealed a decrease in nitrate leaching with increasing depth, mainly occurring during wet fall and winter seasons.

Estimating soil ammonium adsorption using pedotransfer functions in an irrigation district of the North China Plain

Chunying Wang et al.

Summary: Extensive research was conducted on the adsorption capacity, isotherms, and influencing factors of ammonium nitrogen in various soils in an irrigation district of the North China Plain. Results showed differences in NH4+-N adsorption capacity among different soil types, with clay and silt contents significantly impacting the adsorption capacity of NH4+-N. The adsorption isotherms of NH4+-N were well-fitted using the Freundlich, Langmuir, and Temkin models.

Influence of the shallow groundwater table on the groundwater N2O and direct N2O emissions in summer maize field in the North China Plain

Zhao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of shallow groundwater tables on direct N2O emissions, finding that N2O emissions during fertilization accounted for 80%-90% of total emissions during the maize growing period. The increase in groundwater table led to an increase in direct N2O emissions, with higher water-filled pore space values enhancing groundwater-atmosphere connectivity. Increased precipitation accelerated hydrological processes in agroecology, reducing the retention time of N2O and NO3- in shallow groundwater.
