Global distribution, formation and fate of mineral-associated soil organic matter under a changing climate: A trait-based perspective

Noah W. Sokol et al.

Summary: Soil organic matter (SOM) is a crucial component of the global carbon cycle. This study focuses on mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM), which accounts for the majority of SOM in Earth's mineral soils. The authors propose a trait-based framework to understand the processes involved in MAOM formation and decomposition, and discuss how these processes can be influenced by climate change.

Equivalent-mass versus fixed-depth as criteria for quantifying soil carbon sequestration: How relevant is the difference?

Pere Rovira et al.

Summary: This study examines the biases in soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration estimation caused by different approaches. The results show that the fixed-depth approach tends to overestimate SOC sequestration under soil compaction and underestimate it under soil expansion. However, the overall error is low. The study suggests that current estimates of SOC sequestration worldwide, at least in relation to the problem studied, do not require significant revisions. The equivalent-mass approach is necessary for SOC sequestration studies, but may not be suitable for global comparisons of SOC stocks when compared to the fixed-depth approach.

Cover crop functional types differentially alter the content and composition of soil organic carbon in particulate and mineral-associated fractions

Ziliang Zhang et al.

Summary: Cover crops can increase soil organic carbon sequestration through additional organic carbon residues, beneficial soil microbiota, and improved soil structure. Different cover crop species belonging to distinct plant functional types may have differential impacts on soil organic carbon formation and stabilization. The litter quality of plant functional types can influence the pathways and magnitude of soil organic carbon sequestration.

Grassland soil carbon sequestration: Current understanding, challenges, and solutions

Yongfei Bai et al.

Summary: Grasslands act as important soil carbon sinks, storing about one third of global terrestrial carbon stocks. Plant diversity increases soil organic carbon storage by enhancing carbon inputs and promoting microbial contributions. Improved grazing management and biodiversity restoration provide cost-effective solutions for climate change mitigation in grasslands.

Where and why do particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) differ among diverse soils?

Wenjuan Yu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the elemental, isotopic, and chemical composition of particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) in soil samples from diverse ecosystems in North America. The findings suggest that POM and MAOM often show similar characteristics and that MAOM may contribute significantly to short-term soil carbon decomposition. Additionally, the geochemical composition of the soil and the climate and ecosystem type can predict differences between POM and MAOM.

Soil Particulate and Mineral-Associated Organic Matter Increases in Organic Farming under Cover Cropping and Manure Addition

Karin Kauer et al.

Summary: The study found that cover crops and manure addition in organic farming systems are effective ways to increase the soil organic carbon sequestration rate. The composition of soil organic matter varies under different farming systems, with the highest proportion of particulate organic matter (POM) in the cover cropping system. The addition of composted manure increases the proportion of mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM).

Different climate sensitivity of particulate and mineral-associated soil organic matter

Emanuele Lugato et al.

Summary: Soil carbon sequestration is important in mitigating climate change, but the vulnerability of soil carbon to climate change needs to be accurately assessed. By separating soil carbon into different fractions, we can better understand its vulnerability and develop effective sequestration strategies. Different carbon fractions in soils have varying sensitivity to climate change, and management practices need to be implemented to enhance soil carbon stocks and resilience.

The high content of mineral-free organic matter in soils increases their vulnerability to wildfire in humid-temperate zones

Agustin Merino et al.

Summary: The study indicates that under a new scenario of global warming, wildfire may affect new forest areas in temperate and boreal climates, making the properties of soil organic matter crucial for assessing the impact of wildfire.

Dynamic interactions at the mineral-organic matter interface

Markus Kleber et al.

Summary: Minerals and organic matter interact in soils and sediments, affecting biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem functioning. Minerals are assumed to protect organic matter from degradation and promote the persistence of carbon. Various mechanisms such as adsorption, catalysis, and oxidation are involved in mineral-organic interactions, highlighting the complexity of these processes in environments.
