Using stable water isotopes to evaluate water flow and nonpoint source pollutant contributions in three southern Ontario agricultural headwater streams

Larissa Gospodyn et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hydrology and nutrient transport in agricultural catchments in southern Ontario. The results show that soil type plays a more influential role than tile drainage presence in the contribution of event water to total stream flow. The correlation between pre-event water and water chemistry is stronger than the correlation between event size and water chemistry, suggesting that isotopic information provides valuable insights for reducing phosphorus transported by event water.

Technical note: How physically based is hydrograph separation by recursive digital filtering?

Klaus Eckhardt

Summary: Recursive digital filtering is widely used to analyze streamflow components in response to precipitation. Physically based and non-physically based algorithms are commonly used in this context. The comparison between the algorithms of Furey and Gupta (2001) and Eckhardt (2005) shows that they mostly agree, with the only differences being the time delay assumption and the combination of parameters into one parameter, BFImax.

Novel predictors related to hysteresis and baseflow improve predictions of watershed nutrient loads: An example from Ontario's lower Great Lakes basin

K. M. Biagi et al.

Summary: Eutrophication has become a critical water quality issue in the lower Great Lakes basin. Generalized additive models (GAMs) using surrogate data from sensors can accurately predict nutrient loads and offer a better approach than linear regression. This study developed GAMs to predict total phosphorus (TP) and nitrate (NO3-) loads using five years of data from agricultural watersheds in southern Ontario. The addition of novel predictors improved model performance, while the antecedent precipitation index had minimal impact. Seasonal and annual nutrient load predictions aligned with the hydrologic regime, demonstrating the usefulness of GAMs in predicting nutrient loads while considering surface and subsurface flow paths.

Total and dissolved phosphorus losses from agricultural headwater streams during extreme runoff events

C. A. Ross et al.

Summary: Eutrophication continues to be a concerning global water quality issue. Clear information on the conditions promoting large phosphorus losses is needed for managing and mitigating harmful algal blooms. This study analyzed data from 11 agricultural watersheds in the lower Great Lakes basin and found that extreme runoff events were responsible for a significant portion of annual phosphorus losses. The study highlights the importance of event magnitude in controlling the mobility of different phosphorus fractions.
