Tal2 is required for generation of GABAergic neurons in the zebrafish midbrain

Ruihong Wang et al.

Summary: The expression of multiple transcription factors, including tal2, gata2a, and gata3, is associated with the generation of GABAergic neurons in the zebrafish midbrain. Among them, tal2 is crucial for the neurogenesis of GABAergic neurons in the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (nMLF), while the function of gata2a and gata3 is dispensable.

Toxicogenomic signatures associated with methylmercury induced developmental toxicity in the zebrafish embryos

Ruihong Wang et al.

Summary: Methylmercury significantly affected gene expression in zebrafish embryos, particularly the genes involved in visual and sensory perception, phototransduction, ferroptosis, and GABAergic synapse. It also disrupted the expression of genes involved in metabolism, such as fatty acid, amino acid, and glutathione metabolism. Furthermore, genes associated with important developmental signaling pathways like Wnt, Shh, and Notch pathways were also affected. We identified 21 genes that were significantly altered by MeHg independent of concentration and stage, and these genes may serve as signatures for developmental toxicity and/or teratogenic effects.

Methylmercury-induced hair cell loss requires hydrogen peroxide production and leukocytes in zebrafish embryos

Zidie Luo et al.

Summary: Hearing impairment and deafness can occur in patients with Minamata disease caused by methylmercury poisoning. Using zebrafish embryos, researchers found that MeHg exposure led to a concentration-dependent reduction of hair cells, in which leukocytes were involved. The loss of hair cells can be attenuated by co-treating MeHg-exposed embryos with pharmacological inhibitors of NADPH oxidases. Gene expression analysis also revealed the involvement of genes related to combating oxidative stress and immune responses, as well as hair cell regeneration, in the adverse effects of MeHg exposure.

Mercury contamination and potential health risks to Arctic seabirds and shorebirds

Olivier Chastel et al.

Summary: This review article investigates the contemporary mercury exposure and potential health risk to Arctic seabirds and shorebirds. It finds that some Arctic seabird populations have mercury concentrations exceeding toxicity benchmarks, while most seabirds and shorebirds have a lower risk to mercury toxicity. Recent studies have reported negative effects of mercury on hormone levels, genetic damage, and reproductive performance in some bird species. The findings highlight the importance of considering mercury exposure in conjunction with other stressors when assessing the impact on Arctic birds.

Neurodegeneration, Neuroprotection and Regeneration in the Zebrafish Retina

Salvatore L. Stella et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative retinal diseases lead to gradual loss of retinal neurons, requiring neuroprotective or regenerative strategies for treatment. Zebrafish, due to their similar eye structure and development to mammals, are commonly used as a model for studying these diseases.

Long-term visual pathway alterations after elemental mercury poisoning: report of a series of 29 cases

Summary: This study reported findings in workers acutely exposed to very high concentrations of mercury vapor, showing visual impairment and outer retina involvement. The results support the hazardous effect of acute exposure to mercury vapor on the visual system.
