Occurrence of OCPs & PCBs and their effects on multitrophic biological communities in riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River, China

Haotian Sun et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the concentrations, spatial distribution, potential ecological risks, and biological effects of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River, China. The results showed that the pollution level and ecological risk of OCPs in riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River were higher than PCBs. The presence of OCPs and PCBs affected the richness and diversity of bacterial, fungal, algal, and metazoan communities.

Emerging organic contaminants in karst groundwater: A global level assessment

Jasmina Lukac Reberski et al.

Summary: A quarter of the world's population uses groundwater from karst aquifers, which are the most vulnerable groundwater systems to anthropogenic pollution. Studies have shown that the majority of compounds detected in karst groundwater are pharmaceuticals and pesticides, with concentrations varying over five orders of magnitude, and over half of the detected compounds exceeding 100 ng/L.

Occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in groundwater, surface water, and sediment in Xiong'an New Area, China, and their relationship with antibiotic resistance genes

Caixia Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination and ecological risks of 39 antibiotics in Xiong'an New Area, China, revealing potential antibiotic pollution in multiple environmental media and the selection pressure of antibiotics on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). It was found that surface water could be a possible source of antibiotic contamination in groundwater, and antibiotics like AMX posed the highest risk and should be controlled as a priority. The study highlighted the significant interaction between different media and the need for measures to prevent more serious pollution.

Different spatiotemporal dynamics, ecological drivers and assembly processes of bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities in brackish-saline groundwater

Shufeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal distributions, ecological drivers, and assembly processes of bacterial, archaeal, and fungal communities in brackish-saline groundwater. The study revealed significant spatial turnover in bacterial and archaeal communities, with the most obvious seasonal variation in fungal communities. Total dissolved solids (TDS) had a stronger effect on bacterial turnover, while chemical oxygen demand (CODMn) was more significantly associated with prokaryotic community variations. Bacterial and archaeal taxa dominated the metacommunity network, and TDS was mostly related to archaeal subnetwork topological features. Specific functional guilds showed enrichment in lower-TDS habitats, while higher TDS favored bacterial communities involved in dark oxidation of sulfur compounds, fumarate respiration, and cellulolysis. Bacterial and archaeal assembly processes were governed by determinism, while fungal assembly processes were more regulated by stochasticity.

Hydrochemical characteristics and health risk assessment of groundwater in karst areas of southwest China: A case study of Bama, Guangxi

Hao Peng et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comparative analysis of groundwater in Bama, a typical karst area in southwest China. The results showed differences in hydrochemical characteristics and water quality between the exposed karst region (EKR) and buried karst region (BKR). The water quality in EKR was more influenced by human activities. The study recommends reducing anthropogenic pollution and developing clean production plans to promote sustainable economic development in the area.

Multiple metal(loid) contamination reshaped the structure and function of soil archaeal community

Shanqing Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of metal(loid) pollution on the structure and function of archaeal communities. The results showed that the high-contamination zone had higher archaeal diversity but a lower habitat niche breadth. Metal-resistant species, particularly potential methanogens, were enriched in the high-contamination zone, and closer inter-taxon connections and higher network complexity were observed. The study also revealed that bioavailable metals contributed to the variations in archaeal communities and metal(loid) pollution reinforced deterministic processes in the archaeal community assembly.

Jie Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated PFAS pollution in two different aquifers in the North China Plain, finding widespread contamination and identifying PFOA and PFHpS as the dominant pollutants. The health risks to the local residents were found to be low. This study provides baseline data for controlling PFAS pollution.

Emerging organic contaminants in groundwater under a rapidly developing city (Patna) in northern India dominated by high concentrations of lifestyle chemicals

Laura A. Richards et al.

Summary: This study characterized the distribution of groundwater EOCs near Patna, a rapidly developing city in India, with urban inputs and local pollution hot spots contributing to peak concentrations. Additionally, active microbial degradation processes were observed in groundwater, indicating coexistence of limited transformation products with parent compounds.

Hydrogeochemical characteristics of groundwater and pore-water and the paleoenvironmental evolution in the past 3.10 Ma in the Xiong'an New Area, North China

Kai Zhao et al.

Summary: The groundwater level in the Xiongan New Area of North China has been decreasing due to climate change and overexploitation, leading to changes in groundwater chemistry characteristics. Shallow groundwater exhibited higher salinity and concentrations of Mn and Fe, while deep groundwater had better water quality. The study also reconstructed the paleoclimate evolution since 3.10 Ma BP and demonstrated the potential applications of pore-water in hydrogeochemical studies.
