Post-fire recovery of soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen, soil nutrients, and soil erodibility in rotational shifting cultivation in Northern Thailand

Noppol Arunrat et al.

Summary: The study investigated soil properties and soil erodibility after fire in rotational shifting cultivation (RSC) practiced by hill tribes in Thailand. The results showed that soil nutrients and erodibility increased after burning and remained higher than pre-burning levels for at least 2 years. The levels of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen decreased after burning, and their recovery varied among different fallow fields.

Success of post-fire plant recovery strategies varies with shifting fire seasonality

Ryan Tangney et al.

Summary: A global meta-analysis showed that fires occurring outside of the historical fire season have varying impacts on post-fire recovery of plants. Fires outside of the historical fire season may decrease recruitment of obligate seeding plants, but generally increase survival of resprouting species.

The impact of fire on soil-dwelling biota: A review

Giacomo Certini et al.

Summary: Fire plays a crucial role in shaping the environment and has significant impacts on soil-dwelling organisms. Various research findings worldwide provide insights into the immediate and long-term effects of fires on soil biota biodiversity and activity. Understanding these effects is important for conservation efforts and ecosystem management.

Forest Carbon Management: a Review of Silvicultural Practices and Management Strategies Across Boreal, Temperate and Tropical Forests

Abderrahmane Ameray et al.

Summary: Specific forest management strategies can enhance carbon sequestration capacity and soil carbon storage, with old-growth forest conservation resulting in greater carbon storage in soils. Partial cutting of forests increases carbon sequestration rates and maintains higher carbon storage in soils compared to clear-cuts.

A review of fire effects across South American ecosystems: the role of climate and time since fire

Melisa A. Giorgis et al.

Summary: This systematic review analyzed the effects of fire on biodiversity, abundance, fitness, and soil properties in South America. The results show that fire had varying effects on different organisms and soil properties, with differences observed between early and late post-fire times and across different climate types. The study highlights the complexity of climate-fire-vegetation interactions and provides valuable information for land management in fire-prone ecosystems.

Effects of prescribed fire frequency on wildfire emissions and carbon sequestration in a fire adapted ecosystem using a comprehensive carbon model

Liubov Volkova et al.

Summary: Prescribed fire is commonly used to reduce wildfire risk and potentially mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. However, studies suggest that while prescribed fire may decrease subsequent wildfire occurrences, it does not necessarily reduce net emissions. Redistribution of carbon storage within the ecosystem can also impact long-term ecosystem carbon balance.

Impacts of wildfire on soil microbiome in Boreal environments

Kajar Koster et al.

Summary: The predicted temperature changes for future climate will have the most pronounced effects on boreal and arctic regions, impacting the stability of permafrost and fire dynamics in these areas. This will lead to changes in soil microbiome and its recovery and resilience as fire occurrence times shift and fire return intervals, intensity, and severity increase in boreal environments.
