Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in agricultural soils: A systematic analysis

Jie Wu et al.

Summary: Misuse and overuse of antibiotics have led to the rise of antimicrobial resistance. In agricultural soils, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are mostly found due to the application of livestock and organic wastes. Cattle manure, chicken manure, swine manure, and sewage sludge are the primary sources of antibiotics and ARGs in agricultural soils. Sulfonamides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and corresponding ARGs are the major types of pollution. Land-use type, soil, and climatic factors affect the concentrations of antibiotics and abundances of ARGs. Mobile genetic elements (MGEs), especially the sul1 gene, play a vital role in promoting the dissemination of ARGs. Better management of antibiotic and ARG contamination in agricultural soils is important for human health.

Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Soil Organic Carbon and Nutrients Affected by Tree Species and Poultry Litter in a 17-Year Agroforestry Site

Helen C. S. Amorim et al.

Summary: This study assesses the effects of tree species and fertilization sources on soil organic carbon and fertility in agroforestry systems in temperate regions. The results indicate that the application of poultry litter increases soil pH and phosphorus concentration, but decreases magnesium and sulfur concentrations. Additionally, pecan stands that received poultry litter showed increased calcium, organic carbon, and nitrogen concentrations in the soil.

Influence of chemical and mineralogical soil properties on the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole and diclofenac in Mediterranean soils

Francesco De Mastro et al.

Summary: The mineralogical composition and organic matter content of soils have significant influences on the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole and diclofenac. The adsorption of diclofenac is positively correlated with the soil organic carbon and Al oxyhydroxides content, while sulfamethoxazole is mainly affected by the soil organic matter content. Due to its lower water solubility, sulfamethoxazole has a higher risk of leaching in soils compared to diclofenac.

Simultaneous reductions in antibiotic, antibiotic resistance genes and nitrogen loss during bioaugmentation tylosin fermentation dregs co-composting

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study established a bio-augmented tylosin fermentation dregs (TFDs) aerobic co-composting system and investigated the effects of strain Klebsiella sp. TN-1 inoculation on tylosin degradation, reduction in ammonia emissions, and ARG abundances. The results showed that strain Klebsiella sp. TN-1 extended the thermophilic stage, promoted compost maturity, totally degraded tylosin, removed most ARGs, and effectively reduced ammonia emissions.

Effects of salinomycin and ethanamizuril on the three microbial communities in vivo and in vitro

Xiaolei Cheng et al.

Summary: The impact of salinomycin and ethanamizuril on microbial communities in chicken cecal content, manure compost, and soil is still unknown. Salinomycin and ethanamizuril treatments can suppress opportunistic pathogens, but fail to repair the changes caused by coccidia infection. Salinomycin affects histidine metabolism, while ethanamizuril affects aminoacyl tRNA biosynthesis. Salinomycin promotes Proteobacteria in soil, while ethanamizuril has a mild effect on manure compost and soil microbial communities.

Summary: This study introduces the use of gentamicin-clay mineral systems in biomedicine and the development of gentamicin/clay hybrid materials as the bioactive phase of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. The hybrids show stable release of gentamicin in water and buffer solution, and when incorporated into an HPMC matrix at different loadings, they exhibit antimicrobial activity suitable for wound-dressing applications.

Summary: The study quantifies the contribution of land use to GHG emissions and removals in the Canadian Prairies crop sector from 1985 to 2016, showing that sustainable practices led to an 80% decline and that there are differences in emissions reduction between provinces. While some provinces in the crop sector were net GHG sinks, there is still room for improvement, such as conducting more research in Manitoba to reduce emissions.

Annaleise R. Klein et al.

Summary: Beta-lactam antibiotics, commonly found in surface waters, exhibit different hydrolysis rates and products based on their chemical structures, with cephems like cephalexin and ceftriaxone showing hydrolysis at pH 7.0 and pH 5.0 respectively. The adsorption capacity of smectite clay particles for antibiotics varied with pH and the presence of dissolved organic matter, affecting the fate of the antibiotics in the environment.
