Economic inequality and carbon inequality: Multi-evidence from China?s cities and counties

Chong Xu

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzed the trends and drivers of economic inequality and carbon inequality in 262 cities (2002-2019) and 1434 counties (2005-2017) in China at individual and aggregate levels. The results showed that almost all cities, counties, and sub-groups exhibited declining trends in economic and carbon inequality, except for county groups. The main driver for the decline was within-group differences. Changes in population proportion and regional ranking contributed to the reduction of inequality at city and county levels. Decoupling analysis revealed a weak negative decoupling between economic and carbon inequality, with changes in regional ranking and per capita carbon emissions being the negative and positive drivers, respectively. The study emphasizes the importance of simultaneous reduction of economic and carbon inequality for policy implications.

Per capita CO2 emission inequality of China's urban and rural residential energy consumption: A Kaya-Theil decomposition

Gangfei Luo et al.

Summary: With the increasing affluence, there is a remarkable and increasing difference in CO2 emission between the urban and rural residential sectors. The residential sector in China contributes significantly to the national CO2 emission, posing greater challenges in achieving the carbon peak goal. However, the existing literature lacks analysis on urban-rural disparity in CO2 emission. Therefore, this study decomposes the CO2 emission inequality of China's urban and rural residential consumption into four factors using the Theil index and Kaya decomposition. The results reveal that rural residential consumption had a higher increase in per capita CO2 emission compared to urban households, with significant spatial distribution differences.

Carbon inequality in China: Evidence from city-level data

Shimei Wu et al.

Summary: This paper utilizes data from China's High Spatial Resolution Emission Gridded Database (CHRED) to examine carbon emission inequality in China. The study finds a slight decrease in the Gini coefficient of carbon emission from 0.411 to 0.385, indicating a more symmetric distribution from 2005 to 2020. Additionally, the positive concentration index reveals an asymmetry between carbon emission and economic development. The research highlights the importance of considering factors such as economic structure, energy intensity, and climate conditions in addressing carbon inequality.

Tracking the inequalities of global per capita carbon emissions from perspectives of technological and economic gaps

Miao Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new index and decomposition framework to analyze global carbon inequality and its driving factors. The findings show that global carbon emissions exhibit significant inequality, but with an overall decreasing trend. High-income countries have larger and more fluctuating carbon inequality, while middle-income countries have lower and relatively stable carbon inequality. Economic development disparity is the main factor leading to carbon inequality enlargement, while the production technology gap plays a crucial role in narrowing carbon inequality.

Carbon inequality in China: Novel drivers and policy driven scenario analysis

Chong Xu et al.

Summary: Despite its impact on international climate negotiations and regional carbon emission reduction policies, carbon inequality (CI) at the individual sub-national level and its important drivers are often ignored by most countries. This study focuses on investigating the drivers of CI in China from 2005 to 2019, using a newly developed approach. The results show a general downward trend of national CI, with income disparity and energy intensity disparity being the most significant positive drivers.

Global carbon inequality over 1990-2019

Lucas Chancel

Summary: All humans contribute to climate change but not equally. This study shows that the top 10% of the world population emitted almost half of the total greenhouse gas emissions in 2019, while the bottom 50% only emitted 12%. The inequality in individual emissions is now mainly driven by the gap between low and high emitters within countries. Furthermore, the majority of emissions from the global top 1% come from their investments rather than their consumption.

How do fiscally created one-city monopolies cause intra-provincial inequality in China?

Jian Chen et al.

Summary: Cities in a monopolistic position or with advantages within provinces can lead to a dilemma of aggregate economic growth and intra-provincial inequality in China. This study finds that fiscally created one-city monopolies contribute to increased intra-provincial inequality. However, industrial upgrading, urbanization, transportation improvement, and opening-up can help reduce this inequality.

Shooting two hawks with one arrow: Could China's emission trading scheme promote green development efficiency and regional carbon equality?

Shengling Zhang et al.

Summary: The study shows that China's carbon emission trading scheme significantly improves green development efficiency and regional carbon equality, by enhancing green total factor productivity (GTFP) and reducing investments in carbon-intensive industries. This confirms the Porter hypothesis and investment transfer effect, highlighting the need for a unified national carbon emission trading market and synergy between ETS and command-and-control environmental regulation tools.

Reducing Carbon Footprint Inequality of Household Consumption in Rural Areas: Analysis from Five Representative Provinces in China

Mingxing Sun et al.

Summary: The study reveals that rural households in China have relatively low carbon footprints but significant inequality issues. Housing, transportation, and food are the main contributors to the carbon footprint, while inequality is driven by factors such as housing type, heating, car purchase, and petrol consumption. Future actions should focus on transitioning to clean energy, poverty alleviation, reducing income inequality, and improving healthcare coverage to address these challenges.
