How do interactions between mobile genetic elements affect horizontal gene transfer?

Tanya Horne et al.

Summary: Horizontal gene transfer is important for bacterial adaptation and is facilitated by mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Recent studies highlight the interactions between MGEs and their impact on trait flow between microbes. Collaborations and conflicts between MGEs can promote or inhibit the acquisition of new genetic material, influencing the maintenance and dissemination of adaptive traits in microbiomes. The role of genome defense systems in mediating MGE-MGE conflicts and the consequences for evolutionary change at different levels are discussed.

Behaviors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metal resistance genes (MRGs) during the pilot-scale biophysical drying treatment of sewage sludge: Reduction of ARGs and enrichment of MRGs

Sai Xu et al.

Summary: Biophysical drying (BPD) is an effective method for reducing moisture content in sewage sludge by utilizing biological heat, but the fate of emerging pollutants such as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metal resistance genes (MRGs) during BPD process remains largely unknown. This study found that ARGs decreased while MRGs increased in abundance during a pilot-scale BPD treatment, with microbial community analysis showing a decrease in potential pathogens. However, most MRG subtypes were enriched during the BPD process, highlighting potential threats for the end product.

Antimicrobial resistance and population genomics of multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli in pig farms in mainland China

Zhong Peng et al.

Summary: The expanding use of antimicrobials in livestock has led to a rapid increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A large-scale study on AMR in pig farms in China found that E. coli isolates from pigs and their breeding environments in all provinces showed AMR, with 91% of isolates demonstrating multidrug resistance. These isolates showed resistance to last-resort drugs and carried multiple resistance genes, virulence factor-encoding genes, and putative plasmids.

Air pollution could drive global dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes

Guibing Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found widespread presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in fresh snow, and their dissemination may be exacerbated by air pollution. Snowfall effectively spreads ARGs from point sources to the Earth's surface, highlighting the need for better pollution control measures to reduce the global dissemination risk of antibiotic resistance genes.

Geographic pattern of antibiotic resistance genes in the metagenomes of the giant panda

Ting Hu et al.

Summary: The study reveals a correlation between the gut microbiome composition and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in different geographic locations and living environments of giant pandas. Wild populations show differences in ARGs composition based on geographic location, with captivity also influencing ARG composition. The Qinling population exhibits significant dissimilarities in both gut microbiome composition and ARGs compared to other populations, indicating a potential consensus pattern regarding host population genetics, symbiotic gut microbiome, and ARGs.

Metagenomic analysis revealed a wide distribution of antibiotic resistance genes and biosynthesis of antibiotics in the gut of giant pandas

Ghulam Raza Mustafa et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome of giant pandas serves as a reservoir for novel ARGs and antibiotics biosynthesis. Different age groups of pandas exhibit variations in ARGs abundance and biosynthesis of antibiotics, with a positive association between Streptococcus and specific ARGs. Juveniles show a more significant biosynthesis of antibiotics compared to other age groups.

Heavy metal could drive co-selection of antibiotic resistance in terrestrial subsurface soils

Xiaomin Wang et al.

Summary: This study found abundant and diverse ARGs in subsurface soils, with significant spatial heterogeneity among sampling sites. Heavy metals were key factors shaping ARG profiles in soils with high heavy metal contents, potentially triggering antibiotic resistance by increasing mobile genetic elements abundance or influencing bacterial communities.

Diet, habitat environment and lifestyle conversion affect the gut microbiomes of giant pandas

Lei Jin et al.

Summary: Gut microbiota (GM) plays a crucial role in the health of giant pandas (GPs) alongside their bamboo-based diet. Dietary changes, habitat environment conversions, and lifestyle shifts significantly influence the GM of GPs. These factors can impact the diversity and richness of gut bacterial communities, with certain bacterial genera potentially playing key roles in bamboo digestion by GPs.
